on at the MMR, They were before the board almost a year last October. It
was an annual visit to fill the board in on the recent developments in
where they were at the present time, He then turned the discussion over
to Dave Full from the groundwater study office. He was going to give the
board a quick run through. Then Mr. Doug Carson from the AFSC IRP
program will come up to give them an over view of what they have been
doing.
Mr, David Hill introduced himself to the board as the remediation
specialist with the impact area groundwater study at Camp Edwards.
What he had as a prop was a map of the entire installation. Their program
was focused on the northern 15,000 acres of the MMR,, which was known
as Camp Edwards. The board was probably aware of the fact that they
had been studying this area to evaluate the entire trailing to the aquifer.
For the past sic years their efforts were primary focused on investigations
over that time. They were now in a program where they were transitioning
into a cleanup. The map outlines the primary areas of foots for both
investigation and cleanup. He began with demolition area one site. Demo
One is an area where over the years the National Guard conducted
demolition training* That type of activity involved open detonation as a
means for training the troops in how to use explosives properly and
i safely, over the years a fair amount of explosives and repellant
compounds have been distributed throughout the soil. They have
identified a plume of groundwater contamination emanating from the
source area and extends 8 to-9,000 feet to the southwest. The cleanup
project that they were now embarking on is called "'Rapid Response
Action."that they planned on doing there was to install a groundwater
extraction treatment and re-injection system in a couple of areas within
the plume. 'They.,.regulators right now for extraction wells along Frank
Perkins Road and they were closing grievance in how to go about that.
They were also looking at the source area,, which was about a 7,5-acre
natural depression that was used extensively for demolition activities.
IIs. Warden asked Mr. Hill where that was located.
Mr, Full pointed out the source area on the map, which was at the far
north of the base.
FIs. Darden asked if the deepest part of the pond in the northerly
direction,
Mr, Hill responded that that pond was above the plume. The plume was
about 501 below the water table at that point. He wasn't sure what the
symmetry looks like to be honest with her. They ► ere not aware that
there were contents spilling into the pond. They did however have some
6
