t f
monitoring points installed there on the southern and eastern boundaries
of the depression there. The pend level actually fluctuates quite a bit over
the years, Four of the 7.5 acres are known to be fairly heavily
contaminated,, They have it under a rapid response action that is planning
to address that soil. They will be digging up 15,000 cubic yards of material
of that four acres. They have a low temperature thermal absorption unit
going through the permitting stage right now that will be used to treat
that soil.
Mr. Darrington asked if that was going to happen just around the source
area.
I ra Hill confirmed that that was correct. He suspected that that would
substantially eliminate the source of that groundwater plume and the
groundwater actions going on simultaneously or soon afterwards the
plume will begin to shrink. The other areas that they were working on
were the southeast ranges also know as the II J Ranges", The primary
activity over the years has been munitions testing by various private
contractors who were under contract to the military testing weapons,
Those areas were pointed out on the map. He noted that they would also
not some groundwater impact associated with that activity. They had
some other rapid response actions currently beim scoped to address
areas of known contamination at the J Ranges primarily the J3 range. The
bulk of this contaminant is corning down and flowing to snake Pond and
possibly discharging into make Pond as well, They had not detected it in
the pond water. There is a demolition area on the J3 Range, which was
the primary source of the groundwater contamination and the rapid
response action is being developed at this time to cleanup that area.
There was about 1,000 cubic yards. That will also be seat to the soil
absorption unit. The J2 Range they've just recently found a relatively high
detection of explosive nitro-chloride, He pointed out the area and noted
that it was also in the ,J7 Range there was a 1,000-meter berm here with
underground contamination in the soil. Another primary focus area for
there was the central impact area, which was the pink and orange blob
that they could see up in the center there. The boundaries of the impact
area, which all of the munitions were fired into, where the targets were
located. They were finding widely distributed fairly dilute plume of f D
and percloride also in that area. They were looking at some soil cleanups
around a couple of those targets at this point. It was a fairly extensive
area that was Identified, as the bulk soil contamination was
approximately 14 acres. There have been a number of targets in that next
that they have started to cleanup. There are ongoing investigations in the
northwest corner near the canal. They have monitoring wells they have
installed have detected chloride in that area, so that area under
additional Investigation, As well as the western boundary where the town
