w
was forthcoming. But, he asked to be placed on the selectmen's Monday
night agenda. He was hoping that everything came together by Monday.
He was going to write a letter endorsing the program stating that it was
very important to mitigate the spread of rabies. He would answer any
questions at the meeting.
Mr. Santos made a motion to have Mr. Harrington write a letter of
endorsement supporting the Tufts University rabies-baiting program. IVIS.
Grady seconded the motion. Motion passed.
E. Fifths Disease
Mr. Ball wanted to know if the board had been notified by the
superintendent of the schools that they have Fifths Disease. He had been
doing a little reading of that and was concerned about it especially around
pregnant womens
Ms. Grady stated that first of all Fifths Disease was almost continually in
schools. As a school nurse she could say that outright. Secondly,
whenever there was a suspected case they had to get verification from
the doctor that it had been diagnosed as Fifths Disease. Even single time
that that happens they would send out notices through all of the schools
because there were siblings and ride buses together, etc.
Ms. Carron stated that she had received her notice this week for the
second time.
IVIS. Grady Mated that pregnant women are discouraged from corning to
the school. As far as teachers are concerned, they always suggested to
teachers that they first find out that they were pregnant they have a titer
drawn. The probability was that they were already immune to this
disease, Somewhere along the line they had contracted it and had a
positive titer for it. But, because there is a link between fifths disease,
congenital heart disease and the development of the trachea and
esophagus problem, etc. It was especially important when women are in
theirfirst trimester. They always sent out a notice from the school. It was
reported monthly to the DPH.
Mr. Ball stated that the second case was two days ago*
I
IVIS. Carron interjected that the first notice she received was before
Christmas. she thought her son had it. she was describing what her pre-
school son had for fever and rash to Ms. Warden* Mso harden pulled the
description of the Fifth's Disease out of the cabinet. It fit the description
perfectly. She did not have Frim tested, Then she received a notice from
her older son's school, K. C. coombs, that somebody had it.
0
