f- •
Joyce suggested that it might be helpful, going forward, for the Building committee to invite-one
or two Selectmen to our meetings, in order to include thea in our thinking and to enable the
commiffee to talk with them on an informal basis.
A DALL I fAI REPORT.
Randall stated that he had sent Tom 'Neill a plan showing the overlap of footprints of the new
building and the existing library. He further stated that he would look once again at the potential
for repositioning the building on the site in a way that would allow the current library to remain
intact. Randall reminded the committee that costs would be incurred during construction even
though the current library washot removed. safety issues would need to be addressed, i.e.,
traffic into and out of the library with such close proximity to the construction site.
Steve cook reminded Randall that as yet, he has not provided the committee with an accurate
site plan to scale, with dimensions, which makes it impossible to know what options are available
to us. The committee talked about a number of ideas that right be considered for placement of
the new building on the site, which would allow the existing library to remain intact. Moving the
building closer to the street, moving it closer to the back, swinging the front entrance around to
face Jobsfishing Rd. were some of the possibilities mentioned. Randall also needs to find out
from Mashpee Commons what their plans are for possible changes to Steeple street and the
adjacent sidewalks.
Randall shared with the committee his ideas for establishing "partnerships" to help shed some of
the costs of the library. During a recent visit to the Salt Lake city public library, he observed a
retail component in the library: a series of shops,' a gift shop3 a coffee shop, art galleries, a
computer center, etc. The concept was an expansion of the role of the modern library beyond the
original one of,'Merely having books on a shelf. Helene DeFoe remarked that it was indeed a very
interesting ,'nix, but one far beyond our capabilities since vire have already pared down to bare
bones our plans for a new Mashpee library in an effort to meet.the requirements of the Town.
Buff Chace acted that there is a serious disconnect between the'to►rnspeople who want the
library and those who feel it is not needed or wanted. He sees a need for an active public
relations campaign, similar to a political campaign. He also sees the operations budget as ars
issue of concern t6 the town. There will be ars increase per year from$9000 to$27,000.
Increases in staff will be in addition to this. Buff wants to lead a hand and become involved in the
public relations/politics end of the committee's efforts_ Bonnie remarked ark ed that there is a large
constituency in Mashpee that needs to be organized, and suggested having the Friends of tete
Library conduct a telephone tree, asking people to write.a letter to the Selectmen on behalf of the
new library project.
Sheldon Gilbert asked that a model of the.proposed new library be produced so that we have
something concrete to show, in order t o generate the enthusiasm and Interest of the
Townspeople.
Stere Cook asked that Randall do a site survey with all parameters, including various ideas for
changes in location of the building, for presentation at the next Library Building Committee
meeting. Randall stated that he would attend the next meeting on 02117/04, and world have the
requested information with hire to present to the committee.
TIMELINE E of FUT RE'REOUII EI ACTIVITIES (See Attachment ). Sheldon prepared a
proposed schedule of actions that.will be required after the October Town Fleeting.
FINANCIALS (see Attachment c
Sheldon noted that the 10% contingence cost had been eliminated. The %contingency for
unexpected costs remains in the budget. Furniture costs are now separate, not included in the
construction cost figure. Randall was asked what we could expect regarding the architect's fee.
