are both enlarged. There are still front and back entrances to the building. The Program fon
has two rows of tiered seating around the back of the room, with a storage area and a sink and
cabinets for the crafts area. There is a children's rest room. The toddler area Inas been roved to
the back of the children's room, just outside the program room.
The Everts Room will seat 100. There is a small kitchen, 61x 12', adjacent to the Events Room.
The committee members agreed that there needed to be a larger kitchen area: to accommodate
anticipated special everts held in the Events Room. Gave Burton envisioned the need for a
kitchen with a built-in dishwasher} a -door refrigerator, a full-sized sink, a conventional stove,
with provision for counter space. The suggestion was made to eliminate the front entryway to
the right of the meeting room, thus making space available to include a larger kitchen.
Interior design-second floor. Ally.-Roberts'' revised plan has the stairs now moved to the back.
The reference desk is now right in the middle of the floor, for improved supervision purposes.
The Native American Collection is in a prominent, centrally located area. The young adults are at
the back of the floor, but in line of sight of the reference desk. Suggestions were made to make -
provision for a second floor rest room,'and perhaps add a second} smaller reader's desk. Stewart
suggested that instead of adding a second desk, rake the reference desk larger, to
accommodate three persons, not just two. There is a copier on the second floor. Helene DeFoe
stated that the flat floor plan should also include a copy machine.
Steve Cook asked whether Stewart Roberts was including in his plans the incorporation of energy
conservation LEER requirements. Stewart responded that at this point he had not, but would
plan to address these issues at some point. Steve stated that these requirements would best be
addressed sooner rather than later, and should not be considered as an add-on.
Other considerations not yet addressed include the need for a.recycling area, a bicycle area, and
plug-ins for electric cars.
Exterior Design— Option 3. Stewart Roberts stated that he has changed the massing of the
building and changed the back, as well as some of the window treatments. The material for the
outside of the building would be simulated stone material, which would look like limestone. The
base of the building would be precast store. Thera is a cupola included in the plan, which is
decorative, not functional. The cupola serves to designate the library as a public building.
The back entrance has been changed to match more closely the front entrance, with three
second floor windows on either side of the entryway.
Option 1. The front entrance to the building has a gabled roof, distinguishing it from Option 3.
The cupola is not visible from the back entrance. Options 2 and 4 were quickly viewed, but have
the same roof line as option 1.
DISCUSSION. Sheldon Gilbert suggested that the commiftee would like to see some other
general options, as all of the four options reviewed tonight were based on the sane basic design
of the building.
Tori O'Neill commented that he would like to raise the design of the building to a more exciting
and more interesting level. He suggested raking the gabled roof on option 3 more defined. He
suggested doing a different veneer at the front entrance, giving a contrast to the limestone effect.
He also suggested creation of an overhang on the second floor above the front entry, making a
bowed effect. The committee agreed that the bowed window over the front entrance was a good
idea.
I
There was a general concensus from the commi tee that option 3 was the preferred design from
which to work, to incorporate their recommended changes.
I .
9
