4
Environmental Oversight Committee
Minutes
February 14, 2008
OLD BUSINESS:
Review of Action Items:
2. Mashpee River Dredging:
The Waterways Commission is scheduled to attend the March 13,'EOC
Meeting.
It was noted the WWC met with the Board of Selectmen last week to
discuss scenario's to improve the water quality of the Mashpce River and
Popponesset Bay. In July of 2007,the Selectmen authorized the
investigation of widening the inlet to Popponesset Bay to consider the
potential for improvements in water quality and navigation.
The WWC recommended the Selectmen authorize an additional modeling
run on the Popponesset Bay entrance dredging scenario. The scenario
would remove part of the spit to double the width of the existing entrance
channel. Sand dredged from the sand bar would be used to nourish the
spit along most of its length. The Selectmen voted to authorize $1500 to
conduct the modeling run of the Popponesset Bay entrance scenario.
3. Combine Water-Sewer:
It was agreed that Chapter 7 of the Sewer Commission's Technology
Screening Report entitled Non-Wastewater Nitrogen Reduction
Alternatives would be distributed to the EOC electronically.
At the last Sewer Commission meeting, the Nitrex decentralized approach
was reviewed with Lombardo Associates. The Nitrex scenario includes
individual systems, cluster systems, upgrades to existing WWTF's and
groundwater treatment. It was noted to be cost effective, but the method is
not yet technically proven.
4. Natural Fertilizers/Friendly Lawn Program:
Work is ongoing relative to the creation of a friendly lawn program similar
to the program the Town of Falmouth has established.
