I
i
MASHPEE PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
i
TO; LIBRARY TRUSTEES
FROM. HELENE DEFOE
SUBJECT. JULY REPORT
DATE. 8/19/2003
staffs m
t ffi rig at the library continues to be of concern. On .duly 15, Janet Bugle and I
each had a serous family medical emergency. As I. was leaving for the Emergency
Room, I called and left messages for staff that were off or not scheduled until later in
the day. Fortunately, they came in and covered and the library opened on time. We
may not be. s Iucky net tire. Staffing levels are so thin that we have no fle ibiIity to
cover sudden emergencies. The library has now been operating short staffed since
I
October 2002 when Debbie Umina resigned. It's bard to believe that we are
approaching one year of operating at this reduced level of coverage, with no relief in
sight,
Televised Meetin
At the last Department Dead meeting, 3oyce Mason informed us that the Selectmen
pant to have all Board and Committee meetings televised. One Department Head
u stoned if this was meant to be all-inclusive. 3oyce was going to recheckthis. If it
v
does affect the Trustees and Library u6ldin Committee, meetings would have to be
relocated to the Town Hall. Meeting schedules mould probably be affected, as Boards
-and Committees would have to be scheduled for meeting rooms with taping capabilities.
3im Marr has a list of volunteers who are willing to videotape meetings. I will keep you
informed, as more details are available.
Circulation
Circulation
for the month f July totaled 13,046 iters. This is 1,931 less items than
the same period last year. Much of the -difference is probably related to the shortened
schedule.' e were open four days less than a year ago due to the Friday closings a That
works out to less than Soo items per day. There are very few days in the summer when
that few items go out daily. Most patrons have understood about the change in schedule
and been supportive. A few have made it know they have been inconvenienced. I plan
to do an article for the Friends of the Library Newsletter, more fully explaining the
reasons for closing and why Friday was selected.
ARTS ReiDort
I have just completed the annual IS Deport, which is due at the Massachusetts
rd
Board of Library Commissioners (MBLQon September . It was somewhat more
om licated'than previous years because of the changes in CLAMS software. The first
to months of circulation activity was on DfA and required one type of report.
