Il ashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
IVlashpee, Nva 02649
Circulation for December 2006 was 8,975 iters; making our year-to-date total
+fes} 7 items circulated. ' e are once again the fifth busiest library in CLAMS.
Usually in December, vire experience a slight slowdown in transactions the weeks
before the holidays. This year, vire kept busy throughout the month. We are still
running more than % ahead of last year's transactions.
I have been attending the Planning and Construction meetings regularly. Early in
December Joyce Mason selected a subcommittee from this group and asked
therm to review the library program sizes. The committee consists of Steve cook,
Shelly Gilbert and Irving Goldberg. They downsized the .various spaces and
came up with a building of Just over 13,000 square feet. Catherine Laurent asked
r Fri r .
me to review those. figures and meet with the subcommittee to review their
figures. There Frere several areas o the building that gave rine concern. I felt that
-
the children's area, rorkroom space and circulation area had been downsized to
.much and would negatively impact library operations. I met with Steve Cook and
Joyce Cason on December 28th to review my comments. After walking thea
through-the areas I was concerned about: Steve revised the figures to 15,500
square feet. I think the 5,509 SF is the minimum size budding that could be
g
functional but it allows no room for growth. ,Joyce acknowledged that the budding
would be full when vire opened but mould be designed with future expansion in
.Hind.
Following this meeting, Patience ,Jackson, Building consultant for the MBLC met
with the same group of people. Shelly Gilbert Joined us for this meeting.
Patience reviewed the-state grant program. I think her v*s*t was very timely and
helpful because she conveyed to Joyce that It is a matter of when not if we
receive the rant. With the increase requested but the I IBLC (15% across the
board),. Mashpee will receive $2.9 million. she said Mashpee is virtually first on
the list since Dudley is only $585,766 short of their full award.
The II LCpay s the grant awards.in installments. Mashpee could receive-the
first third as soon as a contract is signed and the money could be used as part of
the designmase. Joyce c discussed the size of the building being too larger id the

population
only grows to 18,000 because the standard is 1.2 square feet per
arson. Patience assured her that the size is still appropriate for that size
population. Mashpee could reduce the size of the building by up to 5% without
jeopardizing the grant.
Patience also suggested gays the town .might reduce the cost of the project such
ars having the DPW do the demolition and site work if they had the equip tent
p
and expertise. The torn might list alternatives in-finishes such as type of roof
