r
Mashpee Public Library
P.O. Box 657
Mashpee, Ma 02649
Circulation for January 2097 was 19,650 items, including 24 E audio books from
November 6 . This m o nth's circulation exceed ed last January's by 1 r098 items
(an 1 % increase). our year-to-date total of 82,067 iters is 5% ahead of the
same point*last year. Because we are meeting earlier in the month than usual,
monthly comparison of CLAMS libraries that I usually include with this report was
not yet available.
I have attended two meetings- with the subcommittee of the Planning and
Construction Committee. as well as a meeting of the full committee on January
23'd. The purpose of the meetings was to review the size of the library project.
The first meeting was on December 28th, with Joyce Mason and Stere Cook. We
reviewed the table of areas that Stewart Roberts had identified in December.
Several areas of reduction would have negatively impacted the library's
operations. After the review, the building was increased from about 13,000 to
15,500 square feet.
Following this meeting, Patience Jackson, Building Consultant, for the ll BLC met
with the three -of us. We were joined by Shelly Gilbert. Patience did a marvelous
jo'b of taking the group through the state grant program requirements and
providing an update on the grant program schedule. In past years: the MBLC
has received an annual appropriate of about $16 million dollars for progress
F payments to libraries that are currently in the construction phase. She anticipates
that some libraries will be receiving their final payment, leaving some funding for
new projects. Patience old Joyce that Mashpee is virtually fiat on the list since
Dudley needs only $509,000 to complete their award. She felt that Mashpee
right receive a payment as soon as this August and that money could go
towards design and bid documents.
In addition the M LC has asked for a 15 increase in awards across the board
a -
because of the steep rise in construction prices. Representative Turkington was
filing a bill on January 22nd, including the requested increase. Patience
answered many questions that Joyce had about the grant program including
9
confirmin that the town could reduce the building by 5% and still get the grant,
but cutting deeper than that would forfeit the grant. Joyce raised questions about
the projected population, saying she felt Mash p e .might only reach 18,000
residents. Patience said the grant proposal was still an appropriate size, with
slightly more than 1 SF per person. Patience said that the average size project
funded by the grant program is 1.50 SF per person. Using 18,909 residents tires
1.25 SP would result in a building of 22,000 SF, still resulting in a building that is
below the state average of recently constructed libraries.
