She reported further on the inefficient and <br /> expensive heating system installed in both Libraries, and which <br /> system was rejected by the Board of Library Commissioners, <br /> Orleans, Snow Library. <br /> Helene DeFoe made reference to statements made in Gaffney' s <br /> proposal, page -6- 11 . . .Gaffney avoids experimental architecture. <br /> The building architecture of our products are a direct product of <br /> the program' s statement and most typically in an architectural <br /> harmony with surrounding area. Gaffney does not use our projects <br /> for promoting new architecture, obtaining design awards, or name <br /> recognition. " She noted there is nothing innovative or creative <br /> in this statement. She also pointed out the project listings <br /> do not include corresponding dates and that she would be <br /> interested only in current projects. She also noted there has <br /> been a recent ownership change within the firm, indicating the <br /> current owners had not been responsible for some of the projects <br /> listed. <br /> Gary Eynatian reported he had spoken with Pauline Bently, <br /> Director of Pembroke Public Library, receiving similar comments <br /> expressed to Helene and Ed regarding J. Stewart Roberts. Ms. <br /> Bently cited problems she experienced with her Building <br /> Committee. She expressed disappointment that the building <br /> appears to have reached capacity before the 20-year expectation, <br /> and difficulties with construction company adhering to the <br /> building time frame. <br /> Susan Stanovich, Library Director of Uxbridge informed him <br /> that J. Stewart Roberts was easy to work with, providing helpful <br /> suggestions, and that the project manager was very professional . <br /> Mr. Lushington had been used as the consultant on the project. <br /> The Woburn Public Library representatives reported they were <br /> very pleased with the programming and conceptual design, however <br /> the final design had been awarded to another firm. <br /> With regard to Powers and Company, Inc. , he reported some <br /> difficulties obtaining references. One contact reported the <br /> firm was excellent, as was the project manager. <br /> He further reported that Mr. Lucker' s expertise appears to <br /> be in the construction of academic libraries, while Mr. <br /> Lushington' s expertise is in public libraries. Both consultants <br /> are highly regarded. <br /> He stated that J. Stewart Roberts has more experience with <br /> library projects and the Board of Library Commissioners. <br /> As a final recommendation, Gary Eynatian suggested the firms <br /> of J. Stewart Roberts and Powers and Company, Inc. He stated <br /> -3- <br />
