4-r
Mashpee Public Library
P O Box 657
Mashpee MA
Circulation for May 2008 was 5,600. This was half of our normal May total, since
we closed for two weeks to make the move to Joy Street. Year-to-date
circulation was 1 16,313 items. During the same period in time last year, we had
circulated 123,181 items. During, our first few days on Joy Street, we've
circulated almost 1,000 items. Once patrons realize we have moved and find the
new location, I expect circulation will exceed the totals of the old location.
I couldn't have been more pleased with the move. Things went very smoothly,
thanks to pre-planning by Bridget Bontrager, Steve Cook,, Catherine Laurent and
I. Steve laid out the floor plan for the shelving and office furniture, Catherine
Laurent and the crew form the DPW were responsible for' reprieving the old
Falmouth shelving from Shaw's Supermarket, and setting it up on Joy St. They
were ably assisted by a crew of inmates from Barnstable Correctional institution,
supervised by Sgt. Joe Brait. Joe is a member of the Planning and Construction
Committee, assigned to the Fire Substation subcommittee, rather than to the
library subcommittee. I can't say enough about how hard the two crews worked
to transport and set up all.of our items.
Bridget did a wonderful job of figuring what items needed to go into storage and
which items would make the trip with us. We have 7,000 items in storage at
Flagship Self Storage and Anchor Self Storage, ' The rest of the collection,
approximately 2 .,404 items gaveled to Joy ST. with us. Bridget and a core of
volunteers numbered each shelf in the old library and put a corresponding
number on a shelf in the new library. Susan Cannavo was stationed at the new
location during the move and made sure things got directed to the proper areas.
The rest of the staff, 3anet Burke, Janet Trask, Debbie Umina and I were at the
old library packing and then traveled to the new facility to begin unpacking and
setting up. .
We had many volunteers help with the packing and unpacking. Other showed up
to read shelves to be sure Mems made it on the correct shelf, Hey are too many
to mention by name but I would like to single out )ane Dolan and Ed DeFoe for
the many tasks that they did. Jane helped Janet B. set up and make sure the
shelves in the children's section we're all set. Jane spent countless hours shelf
reading the Children's shelves. Janet and I are very pleased with how her section
came ot1t. She was able to take almost all of her collecfion with us. The area
looks very open and inviting and the children and parents will love it. The rest of
unit 5 is slit between the circulation area, new materials, films and music, public
computers and a small study area. Unit 7 contains the adult collection, the audio
books, and periodicals. Bridget and I have the space at the far back of unit 7 for
