Mas Public Library
4 Steeple St
P 0. Box 657
Ma hp a MA 02649
508-539-1435 FAX 503-539-1437
Circulation for the month,of a flay 2010 totaled 13,289 iters.That exceeded last year's total of 5,776 by
4,513 items. The monthly total increased 1%over the same time period last year. Looking at the May
total column on the CLAIMS May circulation sheet, Ma hp a had the third highest monthly total.
Mashp 's total was exceeded only by Falmouth and Harwich Libraries. Year-to-date, Mashp e's
circulation figures total 109,501.. Library card applications continue to grow at a phenomenal rate. We
issued 260 cards in May 2010, compared to 52 cards in May 2009. In six vire ,the staff has processed
521 new library cards. The growth in cards shows no signs of slowing down,
We have continued to identify building issues that aren't working ars expected.Vile had a training session
with the Pharos Computer Management people,to go over aspects of the reservation system, and
currency kiosk for the photocopiers and printers. The session was helpful and we are more comfortable
with homer the systems are supposed to operate. Weve have continuing issues with a couple of the
Internet stations but the situation is much improved over last month.
We had some problems with minor roof leaks during the recent hairy rains. The contractor was notified
and he had the roofers come take a look. There is ar Planning and Construction meeting tomorrow
evening. I"m sure Rick P mr y will have more information on what the roofer found and hove it will be
addressed. The largest problem is a persistent odor in the area of circulation desk and New Book area.
The building was experiencing high levels of humidity and ray feeling was that the odor was related t
the HVAC systems. The contractor and the project manager have been working with the town to
discover the source of the odor and get it corrected. The library was closed for three days and the A
was set on a high setting to try to dry the building out and reduce the humidity level. The staff worked
at Town Hall on Friday and those scheduled for Saturday made up the hours during the week. The IT
Department set up some computers in the ele tm.en's Conference room so staff had access to CLAIMS
for cataloging and adding serials records to the collection. I was able to work on MUMS and do bills.
The odor lessened but hasn't gone array. The contractor rill be doing an ionization treatment over night
in the hopes that it will remove the smell. Several of the staff went hone sick because of headaches or
breathing issues. They have requested that the building be cleared before they start up the machinery. I
hope by next month's report the problem has been identified and corrected. But.right now it remains a
work in progress.
