Chairman Stevenson stated that, in 2002, the Board of Selectmen defined the Committee as having
seven voting members and two alternates. It had been specified that one member be a School Liaison
and one member be a Tribal Representative. Ms. Landry noted that the Committee could make
recommendations to the Board of Selectmen with any changes that may be deemed appropriate. Ms.
Provost stated that, though on staff at the Boys & Girls Club, she was not a town resident and
suggested the possibility that she serve as a non-voting member.
The Chair noted that the Town Manager initially wished to reinstate the Committee in order to address
issues of information, prevention and recommendations. Members of the Committee participated in an
activity to identify key words that would be representative of the goals of the Committee to include:
inclusivity, diversity, cooperation, integration, sensitivity, respect, awareness, civic engagement,
tolerance, welcoming, advocate, acceptance, community, promotion, rights and relations.
Ms. Wilson expressed her preference for Brookline's mission for their Committee for Diversity and
Inclusion, which echoed Ms. Waterman's thoughts. Ms. Wilson read the Brookline statement. Ms.
Nadeau shared her thoughts for the mission, based on town/city samples provided previously. Ms.
Waterman read her suggested statements, and there was consensus regarding its positive message. Ms.
Waterman liked the term civic engagement. Chairman Stevenson shared her statement. The Chair
noted the need for a definition of Mashpee's community, including the seasonal component.
Ms. Provost liked Ms. Waterman's statement and suggested adding Ms. Wilson's first sentence to Ms.
Waterman's first bullet point. There was consensus to use"embraces and supports." There was
discussion regarding the use of"tolerance" and whether it was an appropriate word to use. There was
consensus that tolerance should be removed from the document as it suggested the toleration of a
person which was not intended by the Committee. Ms. Landry inquired whether the statement was
intended to promote a culture or to embrace the current culture. There was consensus that there was a
lot of good occurring in Mashpee,
Ms. Wilson read the mission statement from Barnstable County's Human Rights Commission group
and clarified their mission and goals.
Ms. Waterman suggested defining the categories. Inclusion would be defined, taking from Ms.
Wilson's statement. There was discussion about community relationship. Further discussion occurred
to draft and define the mission statement. The Chair will pull together the text and the Board Secretary
will distribute the statement for further consideration. A title would also need to be identified for the
Committee. A vote will take place at the next meeting before presenting it to the Board of Selectmen.
Determine New Title for the Committee-It was determined that the new title needed to be
separated from the old title because affirmative action was no longer the role of the Committee.
Likewise,No Place for Hate was part of the Anti-Defamation League, but also created a negative
perception. Ms. Waterman suggested the need to consider Mashpee Committee guidelines. Titles
discussed included Mashpee Committee for Unity through Diversity, The Mashpee Unity/Diversity
Committee, Mashpee Committee for Unity and Diversity, Committee for Acceptance, Caring and
Tolerance (ACT), Committee for Acceptance and Tolerance (CAT), Committee for Promotion of
Acceptance and Tolerance (PAT), Committee for Diversity and Inclusion and Mashpee Inclusion and
Diversity Committee (MDIC).
2
