Massachusetts .-association of School Superintendents, Inca <br /> 1996 EDUCATION RELATED LEGISLATION <br /> CHAPTER 66 - Amends Chapter 71, Section 47 with new requirements for Student o� <br /> 0 <br /> Activity Accounts. <br /> CHAPTER 71 - Amends Chapter 32 to allow certain public employees creditable <br /> retirement service for time spent in the Armed Fortes. <br /> CHAPTER 72 - Amends Chapter 71, Section 89 to give the Board of Education the <br /> authority to grant regional Charter Schools, exempt from the local enrollment preference. <br /> CHAPTER 99 - Amends Chapter 71, Section 41 to extend to threerep vious consecutive <br /> years the length of service required before school district employees receive professional teacher <br /> status. It also eliminates the provision which formerly allowed superintendents to grant <br /> professional teacher status to individuals prior to the individual attaining the status as outlined in <br /> law. <br /> CHAPTER 134 - Amends Chapter 71, Section 47A to make the hiring of athletic <br /> coaches the prerogative of school principals, subject to the approval of the superintendent. <br /> I, CHAPTER 140 - Amends Chapter 71, Section 16 to permit regional school districts, <br /> pending the approval of member communities, to submit annual operating budgets for <br /> approval "following the notification of the annual local aid distribution" from DOR. <br /> CHAPTER 144 - Requires school bus operators to illuminate school bus headlights at <br /> all times while such bus is in operation. <br /> CHAPTER 247 - Codifies in statute the maximum limit of standees on school buses, <br /> and requires specific equipment for standees. <br /> CHAPTER 275 - Directs the Board of Education to extend professional development <br /> opportunities to assistant teachers and paraprofessionals who are certified as teachers. <br /> CHAPTER 278 - Amends Chapter 151B to require all employers to promote a <br /> workplace free of sexual harassment, including adopting a policy against sexual harassment <br /> -over- <br /> 132 LINCOLN STREET, SUITE 6L, BOSTON, MA 02111 617-451-1151 <br />
