Personnel Board <br /> Minutes of September 1 , 1983 Page 2 <br /> Dr . Saunders asked if the Board felt that were adequately in a <br /> position to judge based on one meeting . Manner replied that the <br /> Personnel hoard is as qualified 'as the Selectmen, <br /> Dr . Saunders said that she did not ' fel any degree of expertise <br /> was needed and eommen ed that after reviewing the PersonnelAd- <br /> ministration Plan, it would be a while before knowing the inner <br /> workings of the Board . <br /> Chief Hartin and Paul. Frazier met with the Board to discuss the <br /> seleotion , process that the Chief intends to u.se when hiring two <br /> . full-time firefighter and five call members . He commented that <br /> he wanted to use the. same selection process for both as the func- <br /> tions of call members are the same as full-time members when they <br /> are called to the scene of an emergency. <br /> Chief Martin said that he needed to establish a revised job des- <br /> cription. He also mentioned that currently under negotiation with <br /> the town and the union fts ' a job description for lieutenant . <br /> Chief Hartin explained that part of the entrance procedure would <br /> be a 100 question written examination to assess applicants ' capa- <br /> bilities <br /> a a-bilities in testing existing ability consisting of math calcula- <br /> tions , algebra ,- mechanical appi tude , problem solving, etc . <br /> Dave asked if the Chief wanted the Board to give the test <br /> Chief - Hartin said that he had no preference . He said that he would <br /> be making up the exam himself , <br /> Another portion of the testing will consist of the individual ' s <br /> physical capability by testing for strength and agility . There <br /> will be tasks of carrying different types of equipment , raising <br /> equipment , climbing a ladder , crawling along a charged..hose line <br /> with a 200 1b. person" at the' e'nd. The 'testing will, be done wear- <br /> ing firefighter clothing . ,The range of time will be 20 . t ' min- <br /> utes . Grading will b on a pass or fail basis . The Chief com- <br /> mented that a candidate may not be proficient in one area, however , <br /> compatible in other are'as: He ,,-said that he planned to .take a <br /> number of existing personnel and outside people and run 'them through <br /> the test for validation of time . <br /> L . <br /> Manny asked if he would consider 'kivir # points . <br /> Chief Martin replied that it is possible where it is based on time , <br /> you could give a weighted score.' He said that if there isa range <br /> variation, that may be looked into . <br /> Another area of testing will consist of a swimming event -- 200 Ards . <br /> using one or more recognized strokes . <br />
