Personnel Board
Minutes of September 19 , 1983 Page
Motor vehicle operation will be tested on a standard shift vehicle
(possibly a van type truck) . He said that he would prefer a can-
didate that is familiar with the operation of a standard vehicle .
Chief Hartin explained that the test procedure was abstracted from
the national professional qualifications for firefighters and that
it would be comparable to the test given for a class II driver ' s
license .
Bob - suggested .that the chief look into using the coast Guard Beach
for the swimming test and the motor vehicle test .
Caroline asked if they have five to tern call firemen that want to
come on
Chief Hartin replied that there are ten to fifteen - who want full-
time- . He said that he hoped to establish a list for a period of
two years ; thereby , filling any vacancies from the list ,
Chief Hartin said that he would prefer to hire nationally regis-
tered paramedics as that would , hopefully, take the strain off
the paramedics presently . He said that those people who pass the
exam that are paramedics would be favored.
The chief said that another question that would be asked is if the
candidates are interested in part-time or full-time .
Caroline commented that there was a rove on to have a Large con-
stringent of volunteer men.
Chief Hartin said that there are a number of individuals interested
in becoming full-time firefighters who would be willing to start
off as call firefighters . Paul Frazier commented that Falmouth has
twenty call men per station .
Chief Hartin said that the call members will be filling gaps , He
said that if three members on a duty shift had an emergency, and
three members are called in , currently one , two or three respond
and sometimes nobody responds . The first call goes to career peo-
ple ; the second and third call does to call members and the all
available manpower call does to both.
Paul Frazier said that most towns have permanent firefighters and
call people in existence.
The chief explained that there were three levels in the national
professional qualifications for firefighters and that he would ex-
pect a full-tire firefighter to meet firefighter level 3 within
the lst year . call members would have to meet the minimum standard
of level 1 (which would be performing activities under supervision ) .
He commented that a call member might prevail himself to coo to level.
.
