BOARD OF SELECTMEN Page 4
MINUTES
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1991
• Petition Article :
As President of the Mashpee Taxpayers Association, Paul Finn
made the motion to withdraw the petition. He was advised by Counsel
a letter is required from the petitioners to withdraw. There are
nineteen certified by the Town Clerk. Ten would have to withdraw.
The deadline to withdraw is Monday, September 9, 1991 states
Selectman Hanson. It is the consensus of the Board to not support
the article.
7:58 p.m. Cape Cod Commission Applicant Appointments:
Mr. Sydney Parlow:
It is noted, Selectman Jacobson has stepped down for the appoint-
ment hearings.
Mr. Parlow feels he has experience to balance the pros and cons.
He is eager to keep the Cape' s character. He has lived on the Cape
for seven years and maintains an apartment in Boston. He would modify
his time on the Cape to accomodate the required hours to service the
Commission.
Mr. Parlow has not attended any of the Commission' s hearings at
this time. His view of the Commission is an extrodinary opportunity
to do something that needs to be done;. Due to the unique character
of the Cape, there is alot of planning and understanding. It could
. become a bit overpowering.
Selectman Gottlieb asks what the Cape needs more of? Mr. Parlow
loves it the way it is. The unique character, temperature, atmosphere,
climate and surroundings is what he would like to maintain.
Mr Parlow states he is not involved with community activities and
has not been a good voter. He feels this would be alot of fun and
a contribution he would make to the Town.
Selectman Lawrence asks what is that to maintain a unique status?
Mr. Parlow suggests the Cape may need less and not more such as abusing
with too much concentration in one area. There needs to be a balance.
Selectman Caffyn asks if he would look for input from the Selectmen
for decisions or function on his own? His interpretation is to represent
Mashpee as an appointee of the Selectmen who would be the boss. He
has not worked as an independant consultant for a company in Mashpee
or represented company' s with a problem of the Commission.
8:10 p.m. Mr. George Benway:
Mr. Benway gave his past history of work in Government to the
present Town Moderator for the Town. He has been a year round resident
since 1964. He is currently employed in the real estate industry.
Mr. Benway feels he has the time to represent the Board of Selectmen
for this appointment. His number one reason is not wanting the Cape
to develop into a Long Island. The Commission is to be the instrument
• andwhere the strength of the Commission lies.
Mr. Benway is enthusiastic of what the Cape has to offer. He
sugggsf5for each Town to derive at a magic number to plan growth over
the years or Cape Cod is not going to be what we want.
