BOARD of SELECTMEN Page <br />MINUTE <br />Mo N DAY , JUNE 14, 1993,_�III.Pi.P4 <br />Elias McQuaid re: Forestdale Wells and John's Pond Plume <br />Update <br />I_PliliPP.�� <br />It was noted by Mr. McQuaid that eight testing samples are <br />taken from the pond. Selectman Mills recommended to increase the <br />testing sites along the beach area during the swim season so <br />residents can be reassured - that the ,water duality is permissible <br />for safe swimming. <br />Mr. McQuaid indicated that he will obtain a professional <br />opinion relative to areas to be tested. He will advise the Board <br />next week. <br />Selectman Costa recommended to meet with county Health <br />Officials to obtain further assurance and commitment to <br />reined i a t i on , <br />The Selectmen voiced concern a's to notifying the public with <br />regards to potential health problems that could possibly occur. <br />r. Begley indicated that the risk is ami n inia l at <br />concentration levels found. This is not a major public health <br />threat related Mr. Begley. He agrees to post the area for <br />informational purposes. <br />49 Discussion followed relative to the Forestdatle Well <br />contamination. The eight acre site is located in the Town of <br />Sandwich in the area of Greenway Road noted Mr. Pesce . <br />Trace levels of contamination have been found as a result of <br />pipeline constructed in the earlysixty's informed Mr. Pescee An <br />estimated 70,000 gallons of JP-4 has been found floating on top <br />of the ground water table. <br />n estimated 30,000 gallons or one third of the <br />contamination can be removed as a free product for recycling <br />related . Mr . Pes e . The remaining is bound in the soil and will <br />continue to .act as a source of contamination. <br />We are trying to identify and' quantify. the amount of fuel <br />informed Mr* Pesce. Benzine, at degrading component of fuel and <br />ethylene dibromide have been detected 10-10 feet deep. <br />Areas above 1801 detect clear, clean water. above the plume <br />informed Mr. Pesce . The extraction process should begin in the <br />fall noted Mr. Pese. The preliminary design of the extraction <br />system is currently being reviewed. <br />
