the mass of the building at the Barnstable Middle school .
Their experience with pitched roofs has been good. They have testing
agencies observe the installation of the roof so there are no mistakes.
QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMITTEE
Michael asked how they would approach the design of the technology network
for a school that will not be on line for 3 more years?
Frank Wong responded the backbone of the network can adapt . He has just
completed work on 3 schools in RI and what they have now is not very
advanced but it can be upgraded to multi media later.
Joe asked for the reasoning behind the concept of the Marstons Mills
school ?
Bob Vogel said the concept was simple, a ring around a courtyard so there
are no dead end corridors. It gives a sense of place. The other uses i . e.
gym, are plugged in at appropriate places .
Bill Martiros asked how they would maintain the same "flair" used on the
exterior of the building for the interior? How do you prevent it from
looking institutional ?
Bob Vogel responded that you want to be sure the maintenance will not kill
the project because you will not receive assistance to run it. There will
be some concrete block used. You can gain appeal and excitement by working
with spaces . In Marstons Mills there are cathedral ceilings in the library
with a cupola for added light. For Mashpee , you could expand the corridors
in places for lounges, or display spaces . The opportunities are there.
Janice asked them to expand on those ideas a little more.
John Hirth added you can do different and interesting things even with
budget materials . Colors, the last push in the design stage , can make or
break it.
Steve Greelish said there is a perception that Keyes designs look a lot the
same.
Bob Vogel said a lot of designs are cost driven. Keyes has done a
reasonable range of designs, they have a range of design philosophies.
There is a consistency to it, but he doesn 't think that is bad. He
suggested Keyes and the Committee could visit projects or pieces of
projects the Committee liked and assimilate the best of them into the high
school .
Bill Jones explained the town needs room for 3 classes by sept of 1996 .
Does that make your life easier , is it doable?
Bob Vogel said that schedule is achievable. How would the State finance
that package would have to be researched. There may not be a full range of
core facilities then .
Peter explained they visited the school in Groton and witnessed the
problems with the gym floor .
Bob Vogel said that was finally resolved in court to the districts favor.
The contractor did not finish the foundation correctly . The damage
occurred during a 50 year rain event. If the threshold had been finished
correctly or completed , the problem would not have occurred .
Paul asked to explore that issue further. The Town will hire a clerk of
the works. How detailed is your supervision and punchlist?
Bob Vogel explained their supervision is periodic inspections of the work ,
at least weekly . The engineers would also visit at appropriate points. The
4
