SMMA will begin by working directly here in Mashpee . They concluded with <br /> Dr. DeMoura the best place to have workshops would be in a classroom. We <br /> would hold 2-4 week long workshops . The spaces will be animated with all <br /> the drawings and models that are being produced and available for the <br /> weekly meetings . We will make the Committee a part of the process so you <br /> know what is going on . We will also involve the students because it will <br /> be their school and it is an opportunity to see a design come into being . <br /> We will give you choices for the program and design of the building . We <br /> know people who can act as advocates for various issues i .e. house plan. <br /> The will deliver a design that is the best of what can be rediscovered <br /> about the Cape as well as the best that can be projected about the future. <br /> We believe you can be in your school by September 1996 . SMMA had sent <br /> materials to the Committee which analyses your budget which suggest a <br /> budget of $120 construction , $145 per sq foot project costs . <br /> Mark Chen discussed the interior environment. Interior design that will <br /> support the academic goals of a high school . They choose warm, neutral , <br /> sophisticated tones so not to overwhelm the teaching. <br /> He presented a carpet example which has every color of the rainbow, so it <br /> can be used with all colors and hides stains . <br /> Ray Bordwell said it is an exciting time to be involved in high schools. <br /> They are truly community facilities now. Perry Ohio project has tremendous <br /> community use and support. <br /> For a successful house plan, flexibility is the key . <br /> Technology - the systems that you will put in have not even been designed <br /> yet. Flexibility is again the key . <br /> Ed said they will explore the design in whatever media the Committee is <br /> most comfortable with. <br /> QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMITTEE <br /> Paul said currently they are working on a joint venture in Chelsea. Now <br /> will it effect the ability to get Mashpee's project done? <br /> Ed Frennette said the programming is done for Chelsea and design <br /> development is winding down. These two projects should fit together hand <br /> and glove. <br /> Peter asked Ed his personal experience designing high schools. <br /> He said he has been involved with 2 high schools and 1 related facility- <br /> and environmental learning center. He has also worked on 5 other middle <br /> schools or high schools as designer/project director. <br /> Steve asked if Perkins and Will always partners or do they do their own <br /> designs? <br /> Ray said yes, it is a blend, they have done both. Troy high school is a <br /> stand alone Perkins and Will . <br /> Janice said there is some concern by the Committee that Perkins and Will <br /> will be heavily involved in the beginning and then may disappear after the <br /> programming. <br /> Ed said Mark Chen has worked with SMMA on 3 other projects. We were <br /> colleges long before this project. We can give you our personal commitment <br /> they will be involved beginning to end but you should talk to Linda Snider <br /> at Chelsea and Kim Smith at Nobel Greenhouse School . <br /> 6 <br />
