screen of trees. He distributed the parking in a crescent around the
building . It has multiple entrances which can be zoned off for community
use. He showed clusters of existing trees and proposed to keep as many as
possible to keep the character of the site and make it less expensive than
replacing them.
When traveling along 151 , you would be able to see the building but behind
a buffer of trees . It is a handsome building which works well with the
site.
This plan has encircled the building better with parking and fields , gotten
them closer to the building.
There remains 35-40 acres available for future development.
Carl presented a sketch of the floor plan for the building. He proposes a
"mall " space, with 2 academic houses of 2 stories off of that. Between the
2 houses is shared academic and alternative education space. The food
court could open off the "mall " . The houses define an outdoor courtyard .
Harwich vocational is a mall concept and they have found it very
successful . Deliveries, dumpsters , etc. in the backside away from public
eye .
They presented some images of the exterior of the building . They do not
think shingles are appropriate , masonry will probably be used . The entrance
should be seen through a screen of trees. There should be attention to
detail and some extra money spent at the entrance. They presented a
computer model , looking around the building , first all the 1 story spaces
along the front, then all around to the 2 story spaces in the back . The 25
ft wide corridor/mall allows interaction . They presented a view of the
model , looking at it from above.
DRA' s computer graphics are a tool to work with the Committee and
community.
Project schedule- DRA believes a substantial portion can be completed by
Sept 1996 and full occupancy ready for Jan . 1997 . The project can be out to
bid while being reviewed by the State simultaneously. It will have to be
determined what parts and how much are needed for a reasonable transition.
It is a very realistic schedule. This way double session or temporary
classrooms can be avoided.
QUESTIONS FROM THE COMMITTEE
Bill Martiros said the librarian at the Fall River school was unhappy with
her space. It seems there was extra construction costs of the building to
make it longer, only for visual reasons . Why a green roof?
David Anderson said he had not heard the librarian was unhappy with her
view. They did not get a complaint . They showed the building Committee
several colors for the roof and they choose green . Green and white are the
school colors.
Bill added the vaulted ceiling in the cafeteria at Fall River seem very
expensive for energy costs.
Mr. Anderson said they tried to create a comfortable, happy place. The
cafeteria had overlooks, looking down into the cafeteria. It was
connecting a second floor space to a first floor space .
Joe said the Lordes school ( Fall River ) was a creative solution . You must
8
