the school department would like to see
Peter said there has to be support from the community for the athletic
program.
Mr . Frenette needs a preliminary answer by next week and the definitive
answer the week after that.
Merry sue Ahlgren , Dr , DeMoura and Gus Fredricks will work as the sub
committee to try to define the athletic program.
Peter asked the press, who was present, to try to get the word out .The
Committee is looking for community input.
sMMA also must determine ghat needs to be available Sept. 1996 , which
fields are priority .
Tori questioned the reference to a " recreation building„ on page 8 . Mr.
Bo rdwe l l thought it was a reference to the performing arts center but it
w' 1 1 be removed from the next draft,.
Basis for Schematic Desi n : Mr , Frenette e pl ai ned they wi 11 need to make
some assumptions to proceed to the next level ,
- the $151 . 80 state reimbursement has to be apportioned .
how doss it effect the town meeting authorized funding .
- contin9encies'
-- inflation , things were flat but now they predict a 4-- increase this
year .
M r. Frenette explained they will not know what the bottom line is for costs
for some time but they have to proceed with the schematic design , The
Committee should identify some areas of contingency- prioritize parts of
the school . He suggested as areas of contingency the auxiliary gym and an
area of the theater x which equals roughly 5 of the construction cost.
They need this flexibility going into the schematic design phase . They can
then have dotted lines on those areas so they will know the design could
lose those areas and still work . He would like the committee to offer
other contingencies .
Ian thought the program could be tightened up further before having to take
out the auxiliary gym, or anything else . He suggested finalising the
program and then come up with contingencies .
Mr. Frenette explained they will design these areas and show them,
including pool and central office, but it is important to put the line
around them to know the design could work without them, This prevents the
need for --4 different schematic designs . They cannot do a series of
designs and keep to the schedule
The architects would like to spend the rest of this meeting going over the
prop ram and tightening it up.
PROGRAM
Mr . Frenette asked the committee to consider the text of the program
homework , edit it, get a consensus and then get those changes back to Mr.
Frenette .
Ian Aitchison commented on the text and read from it - "the building :should
foster a. sense of wonder , pride and place” . How will that be created , will
you tell us what that is or do we tell you? He is not sure ghat these terms
mean .
4
