or software companies .
Mr. Kirwan gave an analogy of building a house , spending a lot of time
talking about and choosing fixtures , to the neglect of the plumbing . To
choose fixtures and have nothing to plumb them is silly .
Infrastructure is the plumbing of technology . Plumb it correctly and you
can run whatever you want on it. Incorporate it into the process right now.
He explained Chelsea was not willing to confront the separation between
application and infrastructure, when CCR began working with them. They
were able to cut $300 , 000 out of the construction budget by economically
,technologically plumbing" the building .
In Quabbin they explored what the cable TV company was willing to do.
There are certain contractual obligations required of cable TV companies.
Explore the opportunities.
It is important to provide enough flexibility for teachers and staff to use
technology to demonstrate responsible and appropriate use of technology and
be flexible enough to mirror the changes in technology and curriculum.
He believes telephone systems should be installed in the classroom, need it
for voice mail , allows teacher to interact with parents . Classroom also
needs a sound system - a paging and announcement system.
Community use : voice mail for students , parents and teachers. Videos -
broadcast school meetings, sports events and bring the other two schools
together.
Data: don ' t want technology to be bound by the perimeter of the school .
Share information between classes and town library .
He presented an example schematic of a typical classroom:
Clock/speaker area, with phone which ties into the paging system and
ultimately to outside world . Lights up with who is calling . Voice mail ,
homework line.
Teachers station with computer: data outlet and video outlet for
administrative work and teaching work .
Video outlet allows you to project from the teachers computer, or to other
classrooms.
Distance learning: the logical equivalent to ADA. It is low cost to do
during installation.
One wall , row of fixed computer outlets, to be used with non-fixed
furniture which allows flexibility.
Explore using cable TV systems to economically connect schools - it is
essentially free connections to your administrative, town buildings and
other schools .
Mr. Kirwan said it would be presumptuous for him to talk about what to do
at the Mashpee school at this point. By applying this logic and getting it
into the construction document now this technology can be purchased most
effectively , under competitive bid , and coordinated under Chartwell so you
are maximizing the efficiency and the cost of the project, minimizing the
coordination , preserving as many technology dollars for equipment. As the
building begins to mature , a parallel process occurs using the remainder of
3
