The memorial
would recognize the Wampanoag's who served during the Revolutionary War.
The Historical Commission/Historic District Commission recently learned that grant funding is
available through the State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB). A letter of intent has
been submitted, and matching grant funds are required. The application deadline is January 15,
2018. The total cost of the proposed project is $30,000. It is hopeful the project would receive
CPA funding in the amount of$15,000 at the May 2018 Special Town Meeting.
After discussing the application submitted by the Mashpee Historical Commission and Historic
District Commission at the November 16, 2017 CPC meeting, the proponents were encouraged
to further develop their vision to recognize all Veterans in all military conflicts who have served
the Town of Mashpee. It was recommended the applicants present a more complete proposal to
fund the American Revolution Memorial project and memorials for all American Wars.
Ms. Costello presented a revised budget which consisted for four development phases. The plan
included the following;
• A memorial to all Wampanoag's who served the Revolutionary War
To offset costs it was explained the back of existing monument in the Veterans Garden
would be engraved with the names of the soldiers who served during the American
Revolutionary War.
• To expand the rear of the Veteran's Garden, and to place a memorial to all who served in
the American Wars. The monument would have three panels and both sides of the
monument would be engraved. Two pathways are envisioned with benches and a
meditation area.
• To create a historical pathway from the Community Park to the wooded area between the
park and Attaquin Hotel area (Community Gardens). The pathway would memorialize
major events in the history of the Town of Mashpee to present. Markers would recognize
flora and fauna, and memorial plaques (a previously approved CPA project) would be
placed appropriately. This phase would include a monument for those who went to sea in
the whaling industry from Mashpee.
• The Attaquin Hotel area phase would be used to demonstrate the daily civil life of the
Wampanoag's. A platform area would be considered for demonstrations.
