Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 14, 2017
Mashpee Historical Commission/Historic District Commission, Ava Costello Mashpee American
Revolutionary War Memorial: (continued)
The breakdown of the funding request is as follows;
• Phase I American Revolutionary War Monument, includes engraving,
lighting, pathways, tree removal $15,000
Grant funding: $15,000 (Total Phase I: $30,000)
• Phase II Landscape Architect (includes Phase III &IV) $17,500
• Monument for all Wars $64,485
Total Request for May 2018 Special Town Meeting: $96,985
A second request would be considered for the October 2018 Town Meeting for supplemental
funding needs.
An in-depth discussion followed with respect to the budget for the proposed outline of the long
term plan. Matters associated to authorization, consensus and involvement with Town officials,
applicable departments, committees, as well as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post were
highly considered. It was agreed that appropriate entities should be involved in the planning
process.
It was also agreed the extent of the project as presented will most likely exceed the proposed
budget. After consideration, it was determined the project and its design would require
architectural assistance.
Ms. Costello indicated if the project was deferred, it may jeopardize grant funding. The Town of
Mashpee wants to honor its rich Wampanoag history, and this may favorably single out this
grant. Funding is competitive and other towns, including the Town of Sandwich are vying for
grant funds under this category. Part of the process requires community support and matching
funds from the Town of Mashpee.
Earl Mills, a member of the Historic District Commission asked the CPC what they think of
when the Towns of Lexington and Concord are discussed. Mr. Mills stated when you think of
the Town of Mashpee you ought to think of the Indian and Wampanoag. This project is a history
lesson, and engraving the back of a monument and adding a few granite benches is a start. Mr.
Mills noted that this committee is a volunteer group of three and is in need of a dozen more
people to provide assistance with this project.
