Mr. Lona was asked about his
staffing. He indicated that the office has one full time director,
plus a 24 hour per weep outreach worker. There is also
approximately 180 individuals who volunteer in a variety o
programs, Fundamentally the Council on Aging is people of Mashpee
helping people of Mashpee. It is a Monday through Friday operation
which offers programs all day long. There is 2,150 residents o
lk
Mashpee who are considered senior citizens, which is age o+.
According to Mr. Long, there is approximately 40 o to 600
participants.
The Committee reviewed the department's budget. They noted that
there was an increase in Personnel. Mr, long indicated that the
request for a clerk had been deleted and also the hours of drivers
had been decreased* There had also been some change to line item
0164 in-State travel) . The item has been reduced from $1,800 to
$1,600, The vehicle maintenance line item totalling $3 ,500 has
also been eliminated,
Mr. Goggin asked about the request for a vehicle. It was explained
that the state will pay 0% of the total cost of the vehicle. The
Town needs to come up with $9,000. There is a request to the
Capital Committee for this amount. Mr. Goggin asked when these
revisions had been made? Mr. Long answered that he had met with
the Selectmen last week,
Ms. King asked him about his d pa tment's warrant article #24..
This article requests $15,000 to provide seniors with a real estate
tax payment voucher program. Mr. Long explained that there is a
lot of issues that still meed to be ironed out. He stated that
there was some concern that the department would be setting up two
types of volunteers, those who get paid and those who use the
voucher pr gram. The Council needs to be careful that this does
not become a job bank or personnel office. 'Mr. Long felt it was an
exceptional idea but still bears some additional study. Ms. King
mentioned that she was surprised at the amount o $15,000
especially because there is no mechanism in place in Town. she
felt it should start out small.
