covered as far as liability and it has been reviewed and approved by counsel. He said the
Assistant Manager Wayne Taylor will be the point person but he would certainly welcome any
communication that is going back and forth and he doesn't have any issue if you are
frustrated over something or need further assistance don't hesitate to reach out to him. He
gave his direct line and stated he prefers voice mail as opposed to email. In response to a
question from Michael Talbot regarding MCGAC having its own revolving account, Mr. Collins
said there are funds through the accountant's office and the Finance Director has established
some specific funds very similar. He will check with the Finance Director relative to a
designated account for MCGAC. Mr. Talbot also asked about whether or not donations would
be tax deductible.- Mr. Collins stated he would also check this out with the Finance Director.
He stated he would coordinate through the IT Department their website. He said he would
ask that you contact his office when any activity is happening at the gardens in order that
they be kept in a loop. He did say it would be nice for the committee to give a brief summary
of the activities at the Community Gardens to the Board of Selectmen on an occasional basis.
Mr. Talbot said he felt they should do the same with CPC just to let them know we are back in
business and we are revitalizing the gardens. Mr. Collins noted the purpose of the recording
secretary is to keep the minutes and post the agenda. Mr. Collins said the public and the
press is welcome to come in and if you follow General Roberts Rules and Orders you will be
fine. He cautioned the members not to deliberate over emails. Its OK to get information out
but don't deliberate. Virginia thanked Mr. Collins for coming in. He left by passing out the
"Town of Mashpee Board of Selectmen Policy 078 Mashpee Community Gardens Advisory
Committee". He also noted if they need to make copies for the committee, they can use the
copier at town hall. He said the main thing he wanted to do is say thank you especially to
Michael Talbot.
REPORTS
The Chair noted the committee will be meeting on the 311 Wednesday of the month with the
exception of November because the third Wednesday is Thanksgiving. The November date
will be discussed at the September meeting.
Report on Existing Garden Conditions; Arrange Committee Site Visit
Irene Checkovich said she went to the gardens today and stated she took pictures and it was
a mess. One of our first tasks should be to get in there and clean up.
Report on Chatham Community Garden and Brewster Children's Garden: Irene
Checkovich
Irene passed out pictures of the Chatham and Brewster Community Gardens. She said she
shared the pictures with MEC as well. She said she noticed they use woodchips to delineate
their gardens which works very well. She noted the paths are equal to the plots and we might
want to think about making smaller paths. It might be good to take a look at it with that in
mind. Michael noted geo textile fabric and sea shells were put down on the paths which
makes it very difficult to weed. Irene noted the second page of photos is Brewster along with
the Children's Garden on the third page. She said the fence is totally inadequate at the
Mashpee Community Garden and people who have plants there are stolen and there are no
locks on the gates. She noted the fences on the pictures she distributed. She said Chatham
had mesh along the bottom to keep critters out. It was generally agreed a five-foot fence with
a locked gate could be enough to detour most people. Michael noted that we could include a
security camera.
2
