5
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
August 16, 2018
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS
Ava Costello, Mashpee Historical Commission:
U date on Historic District Si na e Pro'ect: (continued)
The finalized text of the signage is anticipated to be reviewed by the Historical Commission with
comments requested from the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe in October. The timetable for
completion of the project is in the summer of 2019. It is hopeful the project would be complete
for the 150"'Anniversary of the Town of Mashpee in 2020.
To alleviate negotiation with the Tribe regarding access to Tribal lands on Historic District
projects such as the parsonage and herring run, signage is proposed to be placed on Town land
across the street and on the bridge area of Mill Pond to depict the historic site locations.
The walking pamphlet would contain information respectful of the limitations to Tribal land.
QR codes are planned to be placed on certain signage and would be reflected on the walking
pamphlet to provide additional information of interest regarding the sites. With regards to QR
code information, it was suggested the Town of Mashpee website be considered as a resource to
host the QR code data to avoid ongoing maintenance costs. The cost would be minimal.
Review of Revolutionary War Memorial Project:_
Richard DeSorgher was in attendance representing the Mashpee Historical Commission to
review the Revolutionary War Memorial project and future project planned to honor, recognize
and pay tribute to the Veterans from the Town of Mashpee who have served in all wars to ensure
their service and sacrifice is made visible and never forgotten.
In May of 2018, a vote of Town Meeting approved the Revolutionary War Memorial project
granting CPA funding in the amount of$32,500 from the CPC 10% Historic Reserves to fund
$15,000 towards the memorial and $17,500 for the development of a conceptual design.
Grant funding in the amount of$15,000 was also received from a SHRAB Grant. Mr.
DeSorgher indicated that research has revealed a total of 60 Wampanoag Tribal members served
in the Revolutionary War. Seventeen died, and never returned to Mashpee.
With the assistance of the Director of Public Works, the Town will go to bid for a landscape
architect to develop a master plan to include the Revolutionary War Memorial and the Mashpee
War Memorial Project.
