6
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
August 16, 2018
APPOINTMENTS AND HEARINGS
Discussion of Veterans War Memorial Project for Veterans of All Wars—Phase 11;
In continuing discussions regarding the Phase II & Phase III of the project proposal Mr.
DeSorgher indicated the Mashpee Community Park is the selected site location for the
monument which would contain approximately 200 individual names. The preliminary vision
may be of similar shape and pattern as the Veterans Garden containing a polished black
monument in panel form with lighting and landscape.
It was noted that initially, the back of an existing monument was intended to be used for the
American Revolutionary War memorial. With citizen feedback, this was not favored.
Future plans include a connecting path from the Community Park to the Community Garden, the
former site of the Attaquin Park Hotel. The Historic Commission has been working with the
new Community Garden Committee to consider this phase as a Wampanoag history village with
information on whaling.
With respect to the two existing stone monuments at the Baptist Church and at the Heritage Park
Recreational facility, the use of QR information is planned.
The preliminary budget considers $179,879 for the project (includes $30,000 in CPA and
SHRAB funding)referenced as Phase 11 & III. In addition to landscaping and lighting, two flag
poles are planned at the Veterans Garden for the State of Massachusetts and Wampanoag flags.
In honor of the Veterans, 6 Military service flags with poles are planned in addition to benches,
plaques and markers.
Members of the Historical Commission voiced concern with respect to the funding of this project
as the deadline for the October warrant has passed. In discussing this concern, it was agreed the
additional time would provide for more definitive cost projections from the landscape architect
for the May Town Meeting. The deadline to submit an application to the CPC for funding
consideration at the May 2019 Town Meeting is November 1, 2018.
To alleviate concern, members of the CPC related support to the project proposal in May and in
October of 2019 to complete Phase IV.
The time constraint to adhere to the plans for the 150"' Anniversary of the Town of Mashpee was
highly regarded.
It was agreed the Board of Selectmen would be asked to request letters of interest for those
members wishing to serve on the 150t" Anniversary Committee.
