In addition, a new project was completed in Great River
with 6 million quahog seed, planted in a sand flat and covered by a net to be protected from sea
ducks. Mr_ York noted that protecting and growing the quahogs to over l inch.provided the best
chance for survival. Mr_ York added that the CPC project to renovate the ramp at great River
would allow potential for parking and access to the site for family fishing.
Mr. York also submitted a grant to the rational Fish and wildlife Foundation for seeding 24.
million oysters into Popponesset Bay next year, through the creation of 10 acres of oyster reefs.
Successful.development of the community could result in the removal of 6 tons of nitrogen by
the oysters and 6 toms of nitrogen by the associated reef community. Mr. York was also hopeful
that the oysters would self-spawn based on a historic self sustaining population. Success of the
project would result in restoring the water quality and meeting the TMDL for Mashpee. Mr.
York has also been working on filing additional cooperative grants for additional seed and state
of the art technology for real-tune monitoring.
11r. York also noted that work was being completed on the shellfish component of the sever
plan.
Pond & Estuary water Quality
Mr. Talbot referenced a document detailing Mr. Reichenbacher's comments, of the Mash ee
Environmental Coalition, regarding sampling which suggested some degradation in most of the
ponds. Mr. York stated that he was not yet in receipt of all of the State information regarding
Santuit. Mr. York added that he worked with the VEC on pond sampling and reported that h
did not see any issues in any of the ponds, though he was unsure of Moody. Any decreased
transparency was not significant. Mr. York explained the PALS snapshot-of Santuit Pond,
comparing the water quality before and after installation of the Solar Bees(2010-2013), showing
no significant difference since it was a one day snapshot. Mr. York also explained additional
data from the Friends of Santuit Pond which showed that transparency doubled after the Solar
Bees were installed.
