SOUTH CAPE BEACH 11/17/94 PAGE THREE i I DISCUSSION of ISSUE of HUNTING: (Continued) W. woods suggested that if any of the hunters or sports- menis clubs were represented by someone who writes their newsletters , to please insert that construction is start- ing so that it will forewarn their members. J. Monahan made a motion that hunting continue as previously voted, J, Cramer seconded. All in favor. Motion carried. Ii DISCUSSION of PROPOSED NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: W, woods introduced the fact that there was a proposed national wildlife refuge on the table. They have cone up with a proposed environmental assessment with a public comment period which would close 45 days after, which will end on Monday 11/21/94. Winnie indicated she had written a letter in support of the refuge in her individual capacity. They have presented four alternatives which are 1.. To do nothing. 2. To encompass 2 ,500 acres in the refuge. (The preferred alternative) To encompass 5,000 Am - in Mashpee and Falmouth. It has not been indicated that Washburn Is. and South Cape Beach would be a part of the National wildlife Refuge since it is already the state park, They have indicated that the third alternative would allow thea to acquire from willing sellers tracts of land within the wildlife boundaries: They also indicated they would be willing to work with the town agencies , the private groups. The forth alternative is the same as the third, except that they would not have any funds to pur- chase property in the refuge. They would obviously e looking for donations, and also conservation easements. W. Woods moved that the advisory committee write a letter in support of the wildlife refuge that has been proposed, and that we approve the third, and otherwise known as the pre- ferred alternative. Winnie explained, what the third alterna- tive does is protect the entire watershed for wacuoit Bay which obviously includes South Cape Beach.
