6
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
November 8, 2018
Applicant: Catherine Laurent DPW
Proposal Title: Attaquin Park Proposed Basketball Court: $42,000: *Revised: $123,500 (cont'd)
David Weedon, 53 Main Street spoke in support to the new project proposal. Mr. Weedon
indicated the project is consistent with items in Attaquin Park previously discussed with the
Town Manager, and it would be advantageous to have a basketball court properly installed with
the shade option and expansion of the playground.
It is anticipated that work would begin as soon as possible to have the court playable at the
opening of the beach season. It was agreed the Director of Public Works would be consulted
regarding the timing of the construction and possibly phasing the work to not disrupt the use of
the facility.
The basketball court was prioritized as an important resource for youth, as well as improved
playground facilities.
Applicant: Mashpee Community Garden Advisory Committee and Mashpee Historic District
Commission - Proposal Title: Mashpee Community Garden Reconstruction: $44,996:
Virginia Scharfenberg and Michael Talbot members of the Mashpee Community Garden
Advisory Committee were in attendance with Ava Costello of the Mashpee Historic District
Commission to review their application regarding the reconstruction of the Mashpee Community
Garden.
The newly formed committee has plans to revitalize the community garden, a CPA project
developed in October of 2009. Mr. Talbot explained there are a number of deficiencies at the
site. This includes decaying, unsafe landscape timbers and fabric amongst a variety of difficult
weeds to remove in high maintenance pathways.
The small garden plots are shallow and lack quality soil. To resolve significant issues including
security and parking CPA funding is requested to further enhance the beauty of the recreational
property at the former Attaquin Park Hotel by constructing more attractive community garden
areas with display beds and pollinator gardens.
The Community Garden Advisory Committee has been working with the Historical Commission
to review long term uses for the property. Goals of the enhancement project would promote
Mashpee as a Green Community, and allow opportunities to grow healthy food to support 20
families.
With CPA funding work would commence in the fall of next year. It was disclosed the DPW
would not be assisting in this project at this time.
