Old Business:
Shellfish Commission Vacancy Recommendation Darryl Christensen
Darryl Christensen will be attending the Selectman's meeting for the
approval of his appointment to the Shellfish Commission on December
17th of this month. Darryl will be joining the commission for our January
meeting scheduled for the 8th at 7pm.
Shellfish Aquaculture License Applications Update:Mark and Claris Burtis and
Joe and Lisa Bohnenherger
Both the Burtis and Bohnenberger Shellfish Aquaculture License
applications have been submitted to the selectman's office to be added to a
future meeting agenda and public hearing notices will be posted. Both the
Shellfish commission and Waterways commission have also submitted
application acceptance letters to the selectman.
Shel fsh Aquaculture License Interest in the Waquoit Bay Area:
Scott Matoian
Scott Matoian submitted a draft of his Shellfish aquaculture License
Application:
Matoian: I have worked with Mike Ronhock and Dick Cook on both their
oyster grants over the past couple of years. I also work for the steamship
authority and I graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Application submitted for an area to the west of Secconesset
Island to grow both quahogs and oysters.
Fisher: As I have discussed with you in our prior meetings, this area is
productive and has a natural set of quahogs. Therefore, a shellfish license
cannot be approved in the area.
Matoian: I was looking for sandy bottom to lay quahogs. The area we
discussed in upper Hamblin Pond is muck on the bottom.
Fisher: That is exactly why the area is available to be leased to grow
shellfish. When an individual applies for a leased site within the town, it
must be a non-productive area because once it is leased the area is
restricted from commercial and family harvest. If the area was productive
then no one would be able to harvest those shellfish which would hurt the
industry. The area we disused was also deemed to be an area of least
conflict and it is one of the last areas left in town available for an
aquaculture license
Marques: I agree. I have harvested from that area you (Matoian) chose.
The area has been productive in the past.
