Page 6 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> July 15, 1395 <br /> Fire Chief re: Fire Station Feasibility Stud Re ort• <br /> Fire Chief,George Baker and Tadhg Sweeney, an architect of Donham <br /> and Sweeney,Inc. were present to discuss the Fire and Rescue Station <br /> Renovation Study with members of the Board of Selectmen. <br /> Mr. Sweeney presented the benefits of renovating the existing facility. <br /> As noted, the Fire and Rescue Station was completed in 1979 when the <br /> year round population was 3,344. <br /> During the first year of operation,the station has a staff of twelve and <br /> responded to 707 calls. By the year 1996, the population increased to <br /> 10,874. The staff expanded to twenty-seven and responded to 1,552 calls. <br /> The increase in population reflects the increased need for staffing required <br /> by the prod ec ted increase in c alls informed Mr. Sweeney who noted that the <br /> present location of the station is the optimal site for the Town. <br /> At this time, the station is overcrowded for its present level of staffing, <br /> The station has numerous building code and accessibility violations stated <br /> Fire Chief Baker who noted that the station is presently infested with <br /> termites. <br /> Chief Baker indicated that the termites have managed despite extermination <br /> g p <br /> efforts to penetrate to the upper levels of the wood in the operation end of <br /> the station,rendering it useless for renovation. <br /> It was noted that the station must be altered to accommodate modern fire <br /> fighting apparatus. Numerous health violations will also require space. <br /> � new P <br /> Mr. Sweeney presented architectural renderings and cost estimates to <br /> complete the renovation process in a memo dated July 11, 1996. <br /> The total anticipated cost as follows; <br /> Construction cost: $1,992,480 <br /> Furniture, fixtures and equipment $ 190,000 <br /> { <br /> Administrative costs and <br /> professional fees $ 300,000 <br /> total: $2,482,480 <br /> Discussion followed with respect to the present location and related <br /> response time. <br /> Selectman Caffyn recommended to further review the concept of <br /> constructing a satellite station. She recommended to develop a risk <br /> analysis assessment and develop a further comprehensive plan. <br />
