Develop List of Resources-Ms. Johnson-Graham, Ms. Brown and Ms. Doyle
volunteered to meet and develop a list of resources to refer those contacting the Committee,
Follow Up-Confirm that individuals received the appropriate information or help
needed.
Report to Committee-To plan appropriate community activity or response to
fulfill the need identified.
Report Back to Individual
Ms. Wilson suggested that the list did not reflect the mission of the Committee, adding that
Brookline had a subcommittee of people who addressed issues. It was suggested that the
Committee's Power and Duties be reviewed. Ms. Wilson noted that specific skills were needed
to address certain issues and members of the Committee were not necessarily trained to address
such issues. Selectmen Cotton agreed, noting that it had been an issue during the previous month
and stated that trained professionals should address specific concerns. Selectman Cotton stated
that it would be appropriate for the Committee to develop a resource list. Concern was expressed
about not addressing someone sharing concerns, but Selectman Cotton pointed out that it was not
the intended role of the Committee to be that person. Ms. Landry noted that the Committee's
role could be explained to the person reaching out. Ms. Johnson-Graham stated that it would be
important to follow up to ensure that individuals were guided in the right direction, following up
with the Committee. Concern was expressed about individuals potentially falling between the
cracks. There was consensus about forwarding a list of resources and reporting to the
Committee, but that it would not be appropriate to follow up directly with an individual and
could in fact, be a liability. There was consensus about the need to document individual
contacts to the Committee.
Ms. Waterman suggested further discussion about the Committee's mission and responsibilities.
There was consensus to develop a resource list that would be sent by mail to individuals making
inquiries to the Committee, allowing them to determine who/which agencies would be best
suited to assist them. Ms. Wilson agreed with Ms. Waterman and stated her belief that the
Committee's role was in education and not providing individual guidance to individuals'
concerns, because it was not the training the group encompassed. Ms. Wilson agreed that a
resource guide could be developed because there were existing agencies and processes in place
to assist individuals, rather than responding to individual complaints. Ms. Landry recommended
not responding to contacts as a person but as a community, explaining the role of the Committee.
The Chair inquired about the alternative if the Committee was contacted by an individual.
Selectman Cotton recommended sharing the resource list. Ms. Johnson-Graham responded that
the Committee should accept the call, document the situation, listen to the individual, explain the
issue was outside of the Committee's scope, provide the resource list by mail and report to the
Committee. Selectman Cotton emphasized that the Committee could not serve as the resource
for help.
There was discussion about making materials available online, but it was noted that many
individuals may require the guide to be mailed if they did not have access to the internet. Ms.
Wilson stated that the intent of the Committee's mission was attempting to reach as many people
as possible through educational events to provide inclusivity and training.
2
