on Mashpee Messaging of whether or not Mashpee residents would utilize the service and would
be in contact with the Town Manager. Ms. Waterman suggested relating programs back to the
categories of being inclusive, as in this case, families.
NEW BUSINESS
History-The Chair reviewed history about the Committee provided by Ms. Landry,
started in 2000 in conjunction with the No Place for Hate Program of the Anti-Defamation
League, requiring a minimum of two activities per year. It was believed that the Committee died
out around 2009/2010 because the group was unable to establish two activities to be approved by
the ADL. The Chair shared the NPFH Proclamation, noting that it was signed by Town
employees and other members of the community. During the same time, there had been an
active Human Rights Group at the high school that also died down. The Chair shared the
Resolution of Respect that had been distributed among high school seniors.
Questions Format for Future Speakers-The Chair read her email she sent to speakers
to prepare them for presentations to the Committee. Among the items she would suggest would
be providing a copy of the Committee's purpose, define the expectation as it related to diversity
and inclusion/Mashpee's uniqueness, practices to address diversity and inclusion, what has been
successful, how could the Committee help, have problems been encountered. The Chair stated
that she would draft a list and provide it to the Committee and Ms. Wilson would forward it to
the Director of the Library.
Committee Member Reports-Ms. Doyle agreed that the Committee should hold off on
pursuing a newspaper article, but that she had identified the contacts at Mashpee Enterprise and
the Cape Cod Times.
Ms. Johnson-Graham reported that Land into Trust was still in place, the Tribe was pursuing
legislation and the investors still wished to build the casino. In addition, there were significant
layoffs and salary reductions amongst the Tribal leadership, management and staff.
The Chair stated that she had been attending various events, including the LGBTQ group at the
high school and learned more about the inclusivity present at the high school. The group stated
that their goals included more focus on health studies, trans-gender terminology and inclusive
bathrooms. There was discussion about events in which the group participates. The Chair also
discussed her experience attending the Tribal Thanksgiving, suggesting that there could be
greater and welcoming collaborations. The Chair attended the Human Rights Commission and
recommended Special Olympian Amanda Church and member of the R Word Campaign, as
someone who could speak and be a good resource for the schools. Additionally, Sue Wilson, the
President of Pride, lives in Mashpee.
Regarding social media, Ms, Doyle wished to speak further with the Town Manager since many
departments offered their own social media. The Chair was interested in learning more about
whether or not the Committee could seek funding to pay for projects.
4
