Mr. Horner inquired whether financial literacy was begin offered at the Library. <br /> Ms. Mahoney responded that speakers from professional agencies and the College would be <br /> teaching skills for the job market. Ms. Mahoney further stated that the Library was currently <br /> reviewing grant opportunities in the areas of financial literacy and health literacy. Ms. Mahoney <br /> noted that libraries were becoming resource service centers, particularly as so many government <br /> services, such as taxes and Registry of Motor Vehicles, now required online activity. Mr.Horner <br /> referenced the books he had originally provided to the Committee,regarding differences, and the <br /> Chair confirmed that she would forward them to Ms. Mahoney, Mr. Horner shared his <br /> experiences and his book, and offered his willingness to discuss overcoming diversity and speak <br /> to the library or the schools. <br /> The Chair inquired about the most used items'at the library,whether it was the computers,books <br /> or DVDs. Ms. Mahoney responded that book circulation was the highest and DVDs comprised <br /> 25% of the activity at the library, a decline since streaming became available. The library <br /> considered such figures in order to make decisions about where best to spend their funds. Ms. <br /> Mahoney confirmed that the Children's Room was very busy and that they also worked with the <br /> schools collaboratively for certain projects. Additionally, research and other materials were <br /> available nationwide due to the library's reciprocal sharing program. <br /> The Chair inquired about the availability of courses and discussion groups. Ms. Mahoney <br /> responded that the library hosted popular classes such as The Constitution, The Supreme Court, <br /> History of the Press and Politics,taught by retired teachers. Ms. Mahoney stated the importance <br /> of selecting a credible and reliable speaker for such activities with an educational intent, not <br /> promotional for a particular business. Ms. Mahoney added that speakers tend to come from <br /> public agencies or non-profits, and cautioned about the potential liabilities associated with the <br /> selection of speakers. <br /> Ms. Nadeau commented that the library often provided the first access to books for many <br /> families with young children, adding that the Children's Room featured full programs and a <br /> wonderful rapport with the librarian. Ms.Mahoney stated that the Children's Room was <br /> expanded when the new building was constructed. In addition, a grant allowed for an increase in <br /> staff to assist with children's programming. <br /> The Chair inquired about welcoming the summer population and Ms. Mahoney responded that <br /> anyone could get a library card. Out of state residents were charged$5 for a library card. Ms. <br /> Mahoney noted that the library had 1.8,000 library cards, adding that some part time <br /> FloridalMashpee residents used their cards year round. <br /> The Chair inquired about attendance at their programs and Ms. Mahoney stated that their <br /> scheduled classes were filled.
