i <br /> 1 <br /> Page 2 <br /> Board of Selectmen <br /> Minutes <br /> November 4, 1996 <br /> APPOINTMENTS AND HEARING • <br /> Rus&tll P ter re: His Corridor <br /> Mr.Peters indicated that efforts to highlight the Wampanoag historic <br /> g P g <br /> sites will accentuate the interest for the visitor to the Plymouth Rock <br /> National Monument, and provide more balance to the colonization <br /> and settlement of English communities in this area. <br /> The Tribal Council is willing to assume the res nsibli of conducting <br /> po tY g <br /> the necessary historical research to provide an authentic history of the <br /> migrating of settlers to Cape Cod in addition to management and fund <br /> raising potentials informed Mr.Peters. <br /> Mr. Whritenour recommended the Board endorse in principal,the <br /> concept plan as put forth, and submit a letter of support to the Tribal <br /> Council on behalf of the Town. <br /> It was noted that the Mashpee River Corridor begins at the flume of the <br /> Mashpee Lake to Popponesset Bay. The corridor of open space would <br /> be used for the preservation of wildlife habitat,for the preservation of <br /> the Wampanoag heritage and culture, and for some commercial activity <br /> to stimulate economic growth and activity. <br /> Selectman Caffyn suggested the Board tour the proposed historic <br /> district sites. In unison, the Board complimented the efforts of Mr.Peters <br /> and Ms.Tavares for developing such a proposal. <br /> Motion made by Selectman Frye to support the proposal <br /> to develop a system of Wampanoag historic and interpretive <br /> exhibits that focus on the Mashpee River Corridor to include <br /> the use of the twelve acres as proposed, -and send letters of <br /> support to the Tribal Council, Department of Environmental <br /> Management, and Department of Education as recommended. <br /> Motion seconded by Selectman Dinizio. <br /> VOTE: Unanimous. 5-0. <br />
