6:06 Mohsen Meydani & Simin Nikbin Meydani, 34 Wheelhouse Lane. Proposed
hardscape modifications, hazardous tree removal mitigation plantings. NO[
Resource Area: LSCSF, buffer zone to BVW, salt marsh
Arlene Wilson, Wilson Associates, represented the applicants. She explained the
project consists of the construction of a fire pit in the western corner of the property. It
will be built with a 3' diameter stone wall with interior gas fire area surrounded by a
sitting area. The area will be accessed from the pool area. She stated two trees will
have to be removed which are completely covered with ivy which is impacting their
health. They are proposing to replace them with 6 red maples. There is also a third tree
infested with vines which will have to be removed. She explained the mitigation. On
the easterly side of the property, there is pea stone and they are proposing to scrape off
pea stone and plant it with switch grass. They are proposing to replant native
vegetation that is disturbed by the construction of the walls. She noted the Rosa
Rugosa near the pool area and would like to replace it with native compatible
vegetation. The owner would prefer hydrangea.
The Agent pointed out on photos the area where the fire pit is to be built and the trees to
be removed. He said the project is not going into any of the wetlands and noted the
trees are hazardous and the trees proposed to be replaced are of a native variety but
suggested sassafras or tupelo in this area. He noted hydrangeas are more pollinator
friendly than the Rosa Rugosa.
There was a discussion on the mitigation and the fire pit. Irene stated they would be
willing to do some additional mitigation by planting the area to the north and west to the
proposed fire pit with native shrubs so there would be an understory in that area.
No comment from the public
Motion: Mr. Sweet moved to Close and Issue, seconded by Mr. O'Neill. Vote 2-2
with Mr. McKay and Mr. Dalton voting in the negative.
Public
A citizen (Cass Costa) commented the person who is looking to put in the fire pit and
take down hazardous trees and put in mitigation would enhance the property.
The Agent recommended making an additional motion regarding the hazardous trees.
The Commissioners suggested additional mitigation with a revised plan.
Motion: Mr. Sweet moved to Close and Issue under the condition they will
propose additional mitigation with a revised plan and the removal of dangerous
trees. Vote 3-1 with Mr. McKay voting in the negative.
