r r,
MINUTES May 2 , 1.992 5 BOARD OF HEALTH
i
Mr, McQuaid relayed we are concerned with the nitrate
loading, and the virus and bacteria transport that result
1b from septic systems being close to a body of water. "This
may address the nitrate loading but doesn't address the dis-
tance that virus can travel which is well beyond a 1001 , 11
r. McGrath commented the lower ph is to accelerate the
die-off of both badteria and viruses. "There is extensive
research of viral ill--off but we would have to install
larger leaching component or there must be more flow diffus-
ers, "
iff s-
ers. "
Mr, McQuaid questioned Mr. McGrath as to whether he
would provide the Board with the particulars of the ex-
perimental
-eri ental system in Falmouth.
Mr, McGrath responded, ,it is t a waterfront lot consisting
of approximately 1 acre and is serviced by a well.. "The sys-
tem was } l ed i n .a field 10 ' from the water. " "Soils are
sandy and in 'outwash plain. " "."The design was different
when installed, instead of mixing thewater with the .gray wa-
ter we put in a separate rock filled chamber and the system
wasn't acting right, " "Wa opened the-, system and found the
rock was., f l l' of slim me. tl , "The slime had covered all the
voids in the roc' k Player-; there was a bypass and the water was
coming through the pipes so we removed the rocks. " "The re-
sults are provided in the report. " "In reviewing the re-
sults, there were times it was erratic and times we had highs
and lows in nitrogen than predicted however-, the total report
indicates alot of nitrogen removal." "l don't see why the
chemical reactions with the nitrogen won't last forever,"
"The filter systems must be rebuilt every so* often. " "I don't
]snow how much absorption capacity is in the sand'. "
Mr, McQuaid commented,, should this Board grant concep-
tual
on e -
tual approval a testing protocol approved by . . , should be
submitted, "
Mr. McGrath stated yes however, the testing prolEocol
used in Falmouth has flaws.
Mr,. Mc uâ–ºaid questioned the length of time testing will
tale place.
Mr. McGrath responded, two years.
Mr, McQuaid questioned, how lona the filter will remain
active.
L
