we're using MBR here is for the potential to clean up "contaminants of emerging concern" and didn't
want to involve a lot of open tanks.
Mary Waygan (35 Ashumet Road)asked how many trucks(removing solid waste) will be going through
per day,Anastasia Rudenko said right now it's projected to be one a week.
Mary Waygan asked how much staff is needed at the facility, Lenna Quackenbush said it depends on
how this facility is chosen to be run, but similar facilities have 1, maybe 2 people coming in. We've
designed an operations building so if in the future the town wants more personnel, they have that
option.Tom Fudala stated that the commission has planned to use contractors to do the work, just one
town employee to administer the contracts of the contractors.
Joe Lyons said most of these facilities are very automated, with integrated alarm systems to go off if
needed and a commercial person would monitor and be called in.Also, because we have twice as many
people in the summer, this design is incorporating the maximum flow rates we need to have in each of
the phases, we'll be operating substantially below the design limits.Tom Fudala followed up saying that
the areas we are sewering in Phase 1 and most of Phase 2 are not that seasonal. We were looking for
year-round areas we wouldn't waste money on.
-Selection of Value Engineering Consultant
Kent Nichols with Weston &Sampson was present. They've worked with GHD before and look
forward to helping us out.Tom Fudala asked if receiving the materials by November 15 would pose a
problem, Kent Nichols said not at all. Joe Lyons asked if Weston &Sampson was involved in the
Mashpee Commons plant. Kent said he does not think so. The Town of Bourne and Plymouth are the
two closest MBR systems.Joe Lyons asked who manufactured the MBRs. Kent said he believes it will be
a Zenon system. They have experience with a number of other manufacturers as well.
Kent Nichols summarized that the best way to get an effective value engineering approach is to work
pretty closely with the owner and the design team,to identify what information you present and we
tune our work around that to make effective use of your budget to get the review and give you the most
feedback. The preliminary phases can really be an effective time to get feedback to the design team.
We can help them enhance or steer a little bit, but it's very heavily dependent on how much information
you can get to us and then my job is to make sure that our team comes in ready to give you the best
value in that short period of time.
Joe Lyons asked what size company they are.Weston &Sampson is just under 700 people, a
Massachusetts firm founded in 1899. We've done past work with Mashpee years and years back. We
have been a strong water and wastewater firm but we now do transportation and a lot of other things.
Joe Lyons asked what gross sales are, Kent Nichols answered we expect to do about$120 million this
year.
Kent Nichols said we have 3 principal companies, engineering, operations, and a construction group.
We're able to cover a lot of ground with the forces we have.
