Submitted by Veterans"
Services® RECOMMENDED TO RAISE AND APPROPRIATE®
Garland: I move the Town vote to raise and appropriate the sum of
$6,000.00 for Veterans' Benefits® Seconded, and so voted.
(Garland then explained that under law we must provide for veterans
and their widows and children ® we have no choice®
Article 7® To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate
or toe rom available funds the sum of $6, 500.00 for repair and
remodelling of the Old Avant Homestead, or take any other action
thereon® Submitted by Mashpee Historical Commission. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Garland: I would lake to have some discussion from a member of the
Centennial Committee if one is present, as to the reason for having
to apply for an additional $6500.00 when we have already spent
$11,600 on that building ® and most of us see it sitting there in
that deplorable condition every day as we go by® ® ® ® ® ® ®correction
I should have said "Historical" ® not "Centennial® "
(No one rises to speak)
Moderator: Apparently no one is coming forward®
Garland: Can the Selectmen shed any light on this?
K.D. O'Connell : What kind of light?
Garland: A BIG searchlight,
K. D. O'Connell : The problem we have now is that monies due the Town
from the Federal Government ® approximately $28,000.00 earmarked as
reimbursement money which will go back into the General Treasury when
they pay® But we must spend the money first ® and they must approve F
what we hve done or are doing® Of course they will not consider
paying us anything at this time for a not even closed in building®
The contractor we had is no longer with us ® thank God® Part of
the monies we have spent was for purchase of materials and land®
We have not spent $11,000.00 in work® A little over $3,000.00 has
been spent on the building® The balance had to be spent to first
acquire the property.
Garland: According to our figures ® it seems something like $8,000.00
has been spent since the purchase® Do we have any of these promises in
writing that we will have certain Moniesforthcoming?
\\ F. Shea ® Town Accountant: There is a contract saying HUD will pay
us $28,000.00 when we have done things according to their specifications®
We must satisfy their requirements® As the Selectmen said - we gust
appropriate that money before we can collect® It will be returned and
go back in the General Treasury®
