t
Page 10 Special Town Meeting - October 21, 1970
Article 11 Ctd: Rohdin speaking: Floor interruption - Moderator:
Moderator: What Mr. Rohdin is going to say will explain what his
Committee is doing to better conditions in Popponesset Bay.
Dredging the Bay and the Warner project are being talked about
in the same breath. Mr. Rohdin will show that there is no connection
between the two; although one does have some bearing on the other.
Rohdin: A second questionnaire came through the Corps of
Engineers . They wanted to know how many public landing facilities
there were on the Bay, etc. Just this past week I was keminded by
them th4t in order to have monies appropriated and approval given
for the dredging of a channel into Popponesset Bay, we are going
to have to provide boating facilities and services for the boating
public. What does this mean? It means we are going to have to
provide railway services to get boats out of the water for servicing.
Mechanical aid for boats needing the services of a mechanic. . .and
any other assistance which may be needed by the boating public.
You can vote Warner down, if you want Popponesset Bay tolbecome
a stagnant body of water.
From the floor: I am not as qualified to speak about Popponesset
Bay, as on Ockway Bay. I live on Ockway Bay, and for the past
three years have observed marine and bird life there. I have
walked out in the water there and haven't been wet above my knees.
I walked in the area of this marine site and there observed 100
Canadian Geese grazing, along with Scooter Ducks. Fish don' t
thrive in stagnant water. This year there were thousands of
one year old bluefish. You could cast a line out from shore and
catch hundreds of them. There has been less marine growth than
any other year. The water is clear and clean and there are plenty
of clams and crabs . I am not just talking about our generation
but for future generations as well. These small blues as well
as other small fish spawning in the bay, which I suspect by now
have gone to sea, next year will be returning and we will be catch-
ing them outside on the shoals and rips . If we disturb their
spawning grounds we are ruining things for our children and grand-
children. We must preserve this for future generations. (Applause)
From the Floor: I originally made a motion that this article be
tabled for the same reasons expressed here. He asks why he can't
put a marina in Ockway Bay. Because the people don't want it"
It is already done ; once rezoned anything can happen. Mr. Warner
has my sympAthy; but I don't feel this is serious enough to pre-
judice the future of the beautiful body of water called Ockway
Bay.
