Page 9 Special Town Meeting - October 21, 1970
Article 11 Ctd. s (speaker from the floor) certain reasons -
noise; dirt; pollution. We face a similar risk here. This
particular project would indeed produce shellfish pollution,
damaging marine life. . . . . . .we have had opinions from experts
. . . . . .marine gas emissions from motors. . . . , many boats going
and coming into ( . . . ? Bay. . . .here elicits laughter as he could
not correctly call the name of the bay) . . . . . the question also
arises as to whether at low tide the shallow waters would not
require dredging in the future. Nobody wants to deny Mr. Warner
the right to open up a business . But when it would mean harm to
the people living in the surrounding area, I feel it is not in
the best interests of the Town. (Applause. ) The Planning
Board is ; in favor because they feel it is not a big deal to open
up this small piece of land. But they are avoiding the major
issue. They are not taking into consideration the increase in
gas fumes - noise - increase in boating activities a we don't
think this is in the best interests of the town and for this
reason we are opposed.
Rbadint My name is Howard Roodin. I am a member of the
Popponesset Bay Waterways Committee. First, I would like to make
it clearly understood that there is no connection between the
Popponesset Bay Waterways Committee and Mr. Warner ' s project.
It will take a few minutes to bring this before you, if you
will bear with me for a while . I want you to know how serious
the situation is . . . . . . . . . . . .
Rhodin went on to state that as early as 1954 when Mills,
et al were members of the Board of Selectmen letters were written
to the Waterways Committee regarding the opening up of Popponesset
Bay. . . . . .hurricanes had partially closed tide flow in Bay. . . .Bay
was to be opened up as a harbor of refuge and to 'provide a better
living for Mashpee shellfishermen. The reply received Vas that
there could be no action as this had to be done through Congress.
An objection arose from the floor. Rhodin asked for patience.
. . . . . stated that in 1962 Mr. Mills became aware that we would
eventually - and soon have a stagnant bay unless something was
done. In 1969 the members of the Pirates Cove, New Seabury, and
Mashpee Neck Associations asked for the Bay to be dredged out.
The Commonwealth was informed. Senator Kennedy and Representative
Keith were contacted. As of today - and I have been here a
good many years, every year it s getting worse. Shellfishing
is worse. . . . . . .of all the boats out the first day - on the second
day there were only 15 or 20 boats. On the second day out
there ,we.re no scallops . A testing by a marine biologist showed
there was not enough tide flow to hurt-pre the shellfish. . . . .
here arose an objection from the floor as to the relevancy of
Mr. Rohdin' s statement to the point in question.
