In order to
increase his base knowledge in the area of Shellfish management additional training opportunities are
being looked at with the most likely candidate being the County's "Fundamentals of Shellfish"course
offered in February. Harbormaster on-the-job training and regulation education is also being given.
- Plans are being made for the purchase of shellfish "Seed"for the upcoming season. A hard look is
being taken to evaluate what the Divisions realistic capabilities are based on nursery infrastructure,
gear available and manpower. The aim is to learn f-om last season's challenges and increase the
survival of the animals purchased. Right now the plan focus is on "quality over quantity. "A fill report
is being prepared detailing the plan and the economic and logistical justifications behind it.
- The last of the Seasonal employees finished workfor the season on Dec. 1st.
Propagation:
- December has seen a boom in participation in the Oyster Fishery at Mashpee Neck Landing. While to
date we have sold slightly fewer Shellfish Licenses than last year, the number of people making use of
their license appears to have increased. Likely a Covid-19 impact as people have more f•ee time.
- Some complaints on the quality of the oysters have come up after the initial stock of single seed had
been taken. This fitrther supports the choice of moving entirely to single seed from the remote set
approach.
Committee Reports:
Mashpee/Wakeby, John's Pond and f-esh waters: Don MacDonald-The Mashpee/Wakeby committee
still has not been able to meet and Don believes that they will likely not be able to meet until March `21.
Ken Bates asked Ashley if any progress has been made on the Committee she wants to initiate to look
into the bacteria concerns.
