will initiate a routine rotating replacement program going forward. He noted that swim buoys
are ready to go and will be installed by Memorial Day. Maintenance is ongoing on all
Harbormaster boats and all will be in the water by Memorial Day. Jeff has also started training
for all seasonal employees and he presently has 2 billets open.
Jeff reported that the new fee structure for moorings has been initiated for the upcoming
season. The office has worked the current mooring wait list from 719 down to 250 names
whom he believes are actively looking for a mooring. This year we will have a turnover of 28
moorings and Jeff believes the revenue outlook is on budget and funds should be available to
contribute to the Waterways fund.
Lastly, Jeff noted that the pump out boat will be out on the water each Saturday and
Sunday.through Memorial Day then will be rotated between marinas. Hopefully this added
accessibility will make a difference in waste disposal.
DNR Director/Shellfish Constable Report.
Ashley Fisher reported that both she and the Shellfish Constable have graduated from a State
shellfish training program. She noted that the department has had to change shellfish areas
based on mooring density. The department has also had to restrict overnight stays on boats in
designated harbors in order to preserve the areas for shellfish. Ashley also noted that the
department will be receiving 5 million quahogs in June
Committee Reports:
MashpeelWakeby, John's Pond and fresh waters: Don MacDonald stated that the Lake
Committee still has not been able to meet. They do however continue to monitor lake water
levels.
Popponesset Bay Area: No report
Waquoit Bay Area: No report
Water Quality: Don reported that we are well along in organizing for the upcoming testing
season. Boats have been secured and testing teams have been assembled. July 13th will be
the first day of the testing season. We are currently working on a date to do training for the test
teams. It will likely be held at the Ockway Boat ramp as it has proved to be a convenient place
to conduct the session..
Barnstable County Coastal Resources:
Jeff Smith attended the last County Resources meeting as the DNR representative. He
reported that a main topic of discussion was the challenges towns are having finding and hiring
qualified staff. Also discussed were the challenges of dredging such as relocating equipment
from site to site and time of year dredging restrictions. He also reported that some towns are
concerned about crowds on the Cape and the stress it will provide on our natural resources.
Barnstable County Dredge Committee:
Ken reported that the Barnstable County Dredge Committee has been reformed with all Towns
represented. Ken did not make the last meeting but does plan to attend the next meeting. He is
in constant touch with the County Dredge Team.
Ashley asked if Jeff Smith could attend these meetings. Ken responded he didn't see an issue
if he was not able to attend.
