I
J
Tow 1' O 1L aSl e e Blannin Board
16 Great Neck Road North
-%lashpee, Massachusetts 02649
Key challenges facing our region today:
- Natural resources
- Marine and fresh water quality protection
- Challenges that come with rising seas, coastal storms, and warming temperatures
- Addressing the housing crisis (significantly worsened), and doing it in a way that
accounts for needed and planned infrastructure
- Ensuring history, heritage (including architecture and growth patterns), and historic
industries are preserved
The Commission is hopeful that the Development Agreements and projects that come through this
process will also be responding to some of these key challenges.
Map Series Slides
Sets the stage for growth on Cape Cod, showing development by decade. Starting in the 1950's
development increased rapidly across the region. There is a slight decrease through to the present day.
Ms. Senatori took the developed parcel layer and coupled it with the 40% of protected land layer,
resulting in 86% of Cape Cod's land mass being already protected or already developed. We will
continue to see growth, but how and where we grow is important.
This data has led to the development of the Growth Policy for Cape Cod.
- Found in the Regional Policy Plan.
- The Commission wants to make sure to protect and preserve the region's resources
while also giving focus to future growth and development.
- Growth needs to be focused in centers of activity and areas supported by adequate
infrastructure, guided away from areas that must be protected.
- Development needs to be responsive to its context allowing for restoration, preservation,
and protection of the unique resources, while promoting economic and community
resilience
The Regional Policy Plan also looks at the interconnected systems
- Natural (wetlands and water resources)
- Built (transportation networks and climate change)
- Community (housing and Cape economy)
Growth Policy recognizes the importance of each system and balances their impacts and functions to
sustain the Cape in the long term.
The 2018 Regional Policy Plan (RPP) recognizes 8 place types throughout the region:
- Natural Systems
- Rural Development Areas
- Suburban Development Areas
2
