R
There was some discussion regarding the safe-ty factors
involved with streets with the sane or similar names in the
event -of an emergency. All emergency calls are d-ispatched
through the County Sheriff' s office, there is also an issue
of mutual aid in which case emergency vehicles from a
surrounding community would respond to an emergency call
and not be as familiar with actual locations when duplicate
street names are involved.
The Assistant Town Planner noted there is a concerted
e f fort on the part of the Town Clerk and Fire Department to
address duplicate street names and to rename streets when
warranted for public safety emergency response issues.
In response the Chairman noted that the Planning Board
has supported those public safety efforts . She mentioned
Board/Town opposition to using North,, South, East, and West
in a,n effort. to further clarify street locations in an
emergency. The Planning Board is extremely concerned with
issues of safety, however the Board -recognizes the resident
concerns raised this evening.
The Assistant Town Planner explained that the proposed
street name change at this location would affect fewer
residents and that the other two „Pequotlf streets are in
the same location so that if there as any confusion
regarding an emergency response, at least they are in the
same area, whereas the "Pequot" location under discussion
is located on the other side of Town.
Bennis Balarini explained it is the responsibility of
the Planning Board to cons-ider and determine Town-wide
safety issues .
The Town Planner explained that this matter came t
the attention of the Fire Department when they were asked
to comment on the access to the proposed new building.
Michael Talbot suggested the new length of street be
named something other than "Pe u t" as it does not connect
with- the existing Pequot Avenue in order to avoid
confusion. He stated emergency vehicles have responded t
his house in the past without incident, deliveries are made
to this location without confusion., and the location comes
p on Map Quest .
7
