i
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 2, 2021
Application: Mashpee War Monument Project: $86,000
Discussion followed with regards to the advancement of the project and unanticipated delays.
Overcoming design and project material hurdles, it is the consensus of the Historical
Commission to remain with an all -granite monument shaped in the design of a wave. This will
bring forth an everlasting memorial dedicated to honor Mashpee Veterans. The monument
would be a public benefit and a source of pride for the Mashpee community.
It is requested that signage be placed on site acknowledging the support of the Community
Preservation Committee for this project.
Application: Restoration of Lakewood Cemetery Project: 42,438
The goal of this project submitted by the Historical Commission is to ensure the historic
cemeteries are protected, preserved and restored as necessary. Historical Commission members
Ava Costello and Richard DeSorgher discussed the $42,438 project which includes survey work,
tree work, stump grinding, fencing, landscaping and gravestone repair.
The Lakewood Cemetery is noted to be Town -owned. Gravestones date back to the 1800's.
Many stones have broken over time and several are lying face down. The lot is covered with
leaves and branches.
To provide dignity and honor, the cemetery grounds and grave stones would be restored.
The cemetery is the final resting place of Ezra Jones, a Civil War Veteran. Most of the deceased
are English and early settlers dating back to 1805.
The project reflects the criteria as defined by the CPC to protect, preserve, enhance and
rehabilitate an important Town historic resource i.e., the gravestones and cemeteries in the Town
of Mashpee.
With improvements the ancient cemetery would be eligible to serve on the National Register of
Historic Places. It is a scenic site that reflects the character of the Town of Mashpee. A fence
would become a symbol of respect and honor.
It was noted a local gravestone restoration specialist who has completed work on Wampanoag
Tribal cemeteries is available to do the work required at the Lakewood Cemetery.
As with all Town cemeteries, the DPW would conduct the required maintenance.
It was asked if this project has been coordinated with the Wampanoag Tribe.
