M
Community Preservation Committee
Minutes
December 2, 2021
Virgina Scharfenberg
Application: Mashpee Community Garden Expansion: $18,086
Virginia Scharfenberg was in attendance to request CPA funding to continue the Mashpee
Community Garden expansion project. The $18,086 funding request would support the garden
expansion by an additional 14 plots to meet the demand. The Community Garden has been
successful. Currently there are 23 persons on the wait list.
The goal of this project is to enhance the Community Garden for food production for an
additional 14 families, and to promote Mashpee as a Green Community by building and
supporting a vibrant community garden.
CPA funding would support the expansion of the site, reconfigure and incorporate additional
fencing, garden bed construction, pathways, expanded irrigation and water service areas and
construction of the demonstration gardens. Two quotes have been received and in -kind services
have also been secured to support this project
The Mashpee Community Garden Advisory Committee has worked closely with the Historical
Commission on the reconstruction plan. Letters of support were received from the Conservation
Department, the Mashpee Environmental Coalition, and the Historical Commission.
Available funding from the initial appropriation would be used specifically with the additional
funding that is required for the expansion including educational signage.
When asked why the garden is not expanded to accommodate the other interested families it was
disclosed there is little room left for expansion as the Historical Commission has plans to further
use the remainder of the site for planned historical use. In the future other garden areas at
different site locations may be considered.
It was noted the site is very secure without incident.
For disclosure, Ms. Waygan indicated her husband Mohamed Fand is a member of the Mashpee
Community Garden Advisory Committee. However, there is no perceived conflict of interest.
